 #39 – Review of Characters – identify the importance of these people to the story.  a. Zeus  b. Athena  c. Calypso  d. Penelope  e. Polyphemus  f. Telemachus  g. Sirens  h. Poseidon  i. Odysseus  j. Homer

 In The Odyssey, Homer starts by telling about the last days of the Trojan War  The man responsible for the fall of Troy is Odysseus  Trojan Horse story  Because Odysseus was instrumental in Troy’s destruction, he angered the gods who were sympathetic to Troy  The gods vow that he will have a long and difficult journey home. **This journey takes 10 years and is the subject of The Odyssey.**

 Odysseus and his men encounter many dangers which make their return to Ithaca difficult:  Monsters  Women who try to keep him from his wife  Somehow, Odysseus always finds a way to get out of difficult situations  Intelligence/cleverness  Quick thinking  Bravery

 Definition: stories that were told and retold verbally from one generation to another  Many ancient Greeks were not literate unless their profession required them to be  Women didn’t have jobs, so most were illiterate  Men who partook in business professions (trading, selling goods) were literate

 Definition: a lengthy narrative poem that usually contains the heroic deeds and events significant to a particular culture or society.  Example: The Odyssey

 Definition: an extended simile that is elaborated in great detail and usually runs over several lines  Still uses “like” or “as”  Often contains thoughts that do not relate directly to the plot  Used for emphasis

Hermes’ flight: “A gull patrolling between the wave crests of the desolate sea will dip to catch a fish and douse his wings; no higher above the whitecaps Hermes flew until the distant island lay ahead, then rising shoreward from the violet ocean he stepped up to the cave” (Homer). What is Hermes’ flight being compared to here?

Look at p. 898 What is being compared in the epic simile in lines ?

 Definition: a short, descriptive phrase that characterizes a god, person, or thing  Examples:  Odysseus is referred to as “master mariner,” and “old contender”  “Dawn with fingertips of rose” is a epithet used often in The Odyssey to describe the sunrise  “Faithful Penelope” highlights her character

 Epithet: a short, descriptive title used to characterize (describe the qualities of) a person or thing.  There are a few reasons why epithets are important in The Odyssey…

 Characterization (the means by which a character’s personality is revealed)  Identifies individuals  Example: “Son of Laertes, Odysseus”

 Realism (representation of objects/things as they really are)  Connects experience and knowledge of audience to the character.  Example: “Zeus beyond the storm cloud, Cronus’ son who ruled the world.”

 Vividness of Narration  Helps the reader see the character and offers variety to the narrative  Serves as a memory aid to “singers” who had to remember many events from the epic poem.  Example: “Odysseus, raider of cities”

 Definition: the character defect that leads to the downfall of the protagonist in an epic or tragedy Example:  Odysseys’s PRIDE: Odysseus and his men escape from the Cyclops, but as his ship is sailing away, Odysseus yells out that his name is Odysseus, son of Laertes. He has a great deal of pride, and it often causes him to make rash decisions.

Draw a picture of Odysseus – half of it for when he left on journey, the other half upon his return (20 yrs later!). Include at least 20 details of difference, with captions / arrows for each.

What emotions might Odysseus be feeling, having been away from home for so long and facing all of these obstacles? What emotions / obstacles will you face when you are finally AWAY FROM HOME??? Explain and give examples = 50 words After you write the exit, read your self- selected book until the end of the period. Turn in your notebooks after you finish exit!!!!

Tues  2A 10:32  3A 12:47  4A 2:22 (no AF, just check out / renew books) Wed  1B 9:08  2B 11:41  3B 12:53

Daily Participation Points: 5- BYOB!! Read the whole time. Engaged! 4- Read the majority of the time. Tried! 3-Read some of the time had to be reminded. Floundered! 1-No reading, sleeping, off task. Struggled!

 Select a NEW book that you have NEVER read before  Books w/ movies are okay... You can even see the movie!!!... But you also need to read the book.  At least 200 pages, probably more, and appropriate for your reading level  You are looking for a FICTION book, or a non-fiction biography... Not a textbook, not a topic (“auto mechanics”)... You will need to discuss STORY STRUCTURE and CHARACTER.  If you finish this book before the end of the quarter, you will select another book and KEEP READING  There WILL be a book talk (slightly diff)... We’ll discuss later.
