New risks in the digital age of laptops, phones, Internet, and especially social media

We use social media a lot! Social Media is now the number one activity on the web 96% of teens use social networking applications such as Facebook, Chat rooms, and blogs 38% of Facebook users were under the age of 13 25%+ of Facebook users were under the age of 10 22% of teenagers log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day

We know social media is not always safe 59% of teens perceive that public blogs or social networking sites are unsafe 76% of teens are at least somewhat concerned that posting information publicly could negatively impact future 26% of teens know someone something bad has happened to because of information or photos posted online Only 1/3 of households with Internet access are protecting their children with filtering or blocking software

We know social media is not always safe 41% of social media-using teens have experienced at least one negative outcome as a result of using a social networking site 25% have had an experience that led to a face-to-face argument or confrontation 22% have had an experience that ended their friendship with someone

Social media helps criminals Crimes involving social networking sites were more likely to result in a face-to-face meeting Nearly a third of teenage girls say that at some point they’ve met up with people they met online 17% of tweens have received an or online message with photos or words that made them feel uncomfortable Law enforcement officials estimate that more than 50,000 sexual predators are online at any given moment Will meet up with an online stranger

Social media helps criminals 69% of teens regularly receive online communications from strangers and don’t tell a parent or caretaker

Research has proven that digital communications makes it easier for people to lie and bully!

Have you ever had weird vibes when you met someone in- person? “Interview” potential friends before you let them in to your life. Choosing poorly can be costly…

Meet Alicia Alicia Kozakiewicz became the victim of an Internet luring and was abducted to another state where she was held captive. Following a miraculous rescue by the FBI, Alicia, still recovering from her ordeal, returned to school and was soon highly involved in both academic and extracurricular activities. During these years, she came to realize that other children need not suffer her traumatic experience, and so, “The Alicia Project,” Internet safety and awareness education, was born.

I thought it was somebody my own age. Instead it was my abductor… He put me in the trunk, drove 5 hours, then kept me captive in his basement dungeon… chained to the floor with a locking dog collar. I was beaten … and tortured.

Coby Persin A new video shows just how easy it can be for a pedophile on social media to lure a young girl away from her home. The hidden camera stunt from YouTube star Coby Persin has been watched more than 30 million times in the past week. Persin began by posing on Facebook as a 15-year-old boy who had just moved into the neighborhood. With each of the parents' permission, he friend- requested and began talking to three girls, ages 14, 13 and MhMVEjEQg

How to be a Cyber Guardian

1.STAY ALERT: Keep your guard up, be protective of yourself, your friends, and your family. 2.STAY REAL: Be connected in your real life not social networking online life. 3.STAY IN CONTROL: Keep control of your environment, your personal information, and your security at home and online.

What are we sharing?

More for parents to think about… Of the active adult users of Facebook, 66% reported they did not know privacy controls existed on Facebook and/or they did not know how to use the privacy controls. 65% of 8-14 year olds have been involved in a cyber-bullying incident. An estimated 725,000 children have been “aggressively” asked for sex, defined as an offer to meet in person.
