Sudanese Turkish Genetic Resources & Semen Production Regional Center A Look at the priority investments required for the Livestock Sector بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم Intentional Conference on Sudanese – Turkish Relation from Past to Present and Opportunities for the Future February 8, 2016 Dr. Mohieldin H.A.Sadabi Dr. Gurkan Isci Alzaeim Alazhari University TIKA Khartoum Office

► STGR&SPRC is a product of Sudanese Turkish cooperation, committed to the profitability of dairy/beef farmers as well as industry through the development of Sudanese proven genetics and excellence in delivering A.I. services, herd recording and related herd improvement services (feeding, housing) STGR&SPRC established at Managil What is STGR&SPRC ? Sudanese Turkish Genetic Resources & Semen Production Regional Center (STGR&SPRC) Reproductive efficiency is the most economically important trait in the farm animals. The profit obtained from milk and meat is directly related to the reproductive efficiency (fertility) of the respective farm animal. Improvement in general livestock sector, productivity and sustainability will depend on farmers ‟ willingness and access to new technology. Animal extension and advisory services play an important role in addressing this challenge.

► STGR&SPRC Main activity is production of good quality semen from native Sudanese cattle breeds (Kenana & Buttana) as well as proven foreign breeds (Friesian / Holstein and Semimetal) Sudanese Turkish Genetic Resources & Semen Production Regional Center Goals A.I services hardly cover 2% of livestock population of the Sudan and most of the States without proper A.I service and breeding bulls (except Khartoum State 22%). Preservation of native Sudanese genetic resources Provision of Artificial Insemination services through frozen semen Genetic Improvement in the indigenous various breeds of cattle through Artificial Insemination services Expansion of genetic up-gradation of non-descript cattle through crossbreeding Restructuring and reforming post-production technologies and operations related to animal products processing Developing dynamic national/ regional markets & integrating farmers into those markets STGR&SPRC objective

STGR&SPRC Priority Frame Works(1) 1.Enabling environment 2.Institutional reform 3.Increasing animal production and productivity 4.Development /improvement of production support services 5. Information management networks and breeding knowledge systems 6.Animal product industrialization and value chain development. 7.Addressing animal health issues, vaccination and disease diagnostic resources 8.Food security and nutrition, quality assurance and safety measures for local and export commodities

1.The center Location appears to be functioning primarily as a pipeline for transit animals moving to the different ranches areas within Gezira and Managil Scheme. 2.Lack of National Breeding policy in Sudan crossbreeding is being done without guidance to what type of breeds to be used where and how much exotic blood to maintain Policy. 3.Crossbreeding needs to be of interest to private sector from Producer, to Animal product -industries to export commodities 4.Recording Institution is essential asset for improvement and updating of livestock registration records and evaluation of statistical analyses of the genotypic and phenotypic data as well as performance recording and evaluation (Genetically and economically) 5.Bull Performance Test Center is an outstanding asset to the Semen production Industry. The roll of this center is to identify the best healthy young bulls for potential progeny testing and from there into active Sperm Production at STGRSPRC. Challenges facing STGR&SPRC

6.The A.I services Limitation Currently the service at Gezira State is available only in urban and peri-urban areas. Establishing of a new Artificial Insemination Services center and training of more Inseminators is a must. 7.The A.I services need to be balanced between public (30%) and private sector (70%) over the 5-years of implementation 8.Financial Management STGRSPRC must be funded by Gezira State (MfAANR) and TIKA. The budget amendment must shift to Direct Decentralized Policies, Strategies and Logistics. 9.Lack of Breed organizations of the and producers /breeders units are a very important tool for maintenance and improvement of breed characteristics and performance 10.Fodder production success of livestock sector depends on economic nutritional feeding, availability of green and dry fodder (Green Paddocks, Bailing of hay and silage making) which requires a comprehensive integrated strategy that is closely aligned with business goals. Challenges facing STGR&SPRC

1.Marketing is the critical component for STGR&SPRC success. 2.Currently, private sector is meeting the demand of 2% of the breed- able cows in the Country. 3. There is always a demand for good quality Buttana &Kenana semen they are the best dairy cattle in Sudan, suited for crossing the beef breeds of Western tropical Country regions. 4.The Federal Ministry of Animal Resources fisheries &Range is in the process of establishing networks of artificial insemination services canters for the genetic improvement of Livestock. STGR&SPRC will cater to the needs of breed-able herd population of cattle through these networks. 5.Besides meeting the domestic market demands of frozen semen, there is a potential for exports as well. 6.marketing of semen, following groups will be approached:1/Large Livestock Farms 2/ Artificial Insemination Services Companies 3/ State Breed Improvement Admistrations.4/ Exporters. Challenges facing STGR&SPRC, Market Size & Growth
