SDEA Representative Council Meeting APRIL 20, /17 SALARY WAGE REOPENER TIMELINE & MEMBER INPUT

2016/17 Bargaining Timeline Wage Reopener April 20: Survey Review & Questions April 21: Survey ed to members May 5: Last day to complete the survey May 11: Rep Council – Survey results shared at May meeting May 12: Site meetings to discuss survey results May 23-June 3: Input meetings May 23, 24, & 25 (locations TBD) June 14: Sunshine School Board Meeting June 15: State Budget Adopted June 15-24: First Bargaining Session to be Conducted

Survey – Wage Negotiations During our Fight for 5! Bargaining campaign, SDEA members won the right to return to the bargaining table this spring to bargain wage increases. Our current contract does not expire until June 30, The contract is closed, with no changes except to reopen to increase wages for That means benefits, class size, and anything else other than salary increases stay off the table.

The reopener section of the contract (Section 7.1.3) reads, “After approval of the state budget, the parties will reopen negotiations on this article, wages. Negotiations shall commerce no later than ten (10) days after the adoption of the state budget. The reopener shall be for the purpose of negotiating increases to wages.” By law, the state budget must be adopted by June 15 of each year. That means we’ll be heading to the bargaining table soon!

All Member Survey: Wage Prioritization Each SDEA member has $100 to use to increase member compensation, including base salary and all other forms of payment. In the boxes below, distribute your $100. For example, you could put all $100 in the salary increase box, $10 into each box, or any other combination that adds up to $100.

SURVEY: Members may allocate the $100 on any of the following  Across-the-board pay raise for all members  Increase pay for secondary members who serve as an adviser for school activities (These are “extended day units” earned by high school members who serve in positions such as athletic coach or newspaper adviser that last for a semester or longer. See Appendix A, Section 7.02.)  Increase pay for hourly service outside the work day (These rates of pay apply to “overtime” work such as tutoring, curriculum writing, workshop attendance and more. See Appendix A, Section 7.01.)  Create an hourly rate of pay for one-time event supervision outside the work day for all members (Currently this is a flat rate rather than an hourly rate. Members receive the same stipend, such as a school dance or basketball game, no matter how long it lasts. Also, it currently applies only to secondary members. See Appendix A, Section 7.04.)  Increase the stipends for counselors, special education teachers and specified programs (Specified programs in the contract include Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, resource teachers and more. See Appendix A, Section 8.00.)

SURVEY: Members may allocate the $100 on any of the following (cont.)  Make it easier for all members to move across the salary schedule columns  Compact the Early Childhood Educator salary schedule so ECE teachers reach the top faster (The ECE schedule is the only one that is still 23 steps rather than 17 steps).  Increase summer school/intersession pay  Increase salary schedule credit for National Board Certification or holding a doctorate  OTHER – (If you have any other suggestions, type them in the comment box below. Don’t forget to allocate points to this option).
