History Of Canada LIVENGOOD-6 TH GRADE HUMANITIES

The early days Evidence suggests that the first European in North America were the Vikings. Vikings – Scandinavians who travelled from 796 AD to 1066 AD. Settlements have recently been discovered, but nothing long lasting has ever been proved. What do you think happened to the Vikings? Why were there no lasting outposts or colonies?

Native Canadian Tribes First Nations  People who lived south of Arctic region.  They developed political systems, economies and religious beliefs.  Algonquins – skilled hunters who lived in Quebec

First Nations Many great tribes in the 1400 and 1500s  Iroquois – large farming villages in Southern Canada  Plains Dwellers in the west hunted for buffalo  Yale and Yekooche people on the Pacific coast had great luck with salmon and whales First Nations map

First Nations Inuit  Lived in Arctic region of far north and are not a part of First Nations  Migrate year round to look for food  Great works of Inuit art on display at Dennos Haida people  Lived in British Columbia  Survived and lasted by trapping and hunting

First Nations Inuit ArtHaida Art

The Tribes and Europeans  The First Nations worshipped the land and used it carefully  They trapped for warmth and food  In the 1700s, Europeans discovered the beaver from the Native tribes  Fur coats and warm hats of beaver and rabbit claimed a high value back in Europe.  Soon the British and French were fighting over who “owned” the profitable fur trade in Canada and the United States.

First Nations Wrap Up  Who were the First Nations?  Where did they live?  How did they live?  What is one common factor of all tribes mentioned?

Two European nations and one destination The French  In 1534, Jacques Cartier claimed New France for France.  Profitable fur trade helped establish colonies, but the French struggled to keep settlements go1608ing  In 1608, Samuel de Champlain established what is modern day Quebec City.  For over 150 years the French ran a profitable fur trade out of New France The English  British operated trading posts outside of New France  They learned the best land for furs was north of New France, around Hudson Bay  In 1670, the king of Britain granted this territory to the Hudson Bay company.  This company ran a very profitable fur business for England and the king

French and Indian War aka 7 Years War aka The War that Made America aka The First World War What can you tell me about this war based on the painting and numerous names of the war? The Death of General Wolf by Ben West 1771

The Seven Years War or The French and Indian War or 10,000 day War or The War that made America or The First Global Conflict  War begins in Europe  Spreads to North America  Lasted 7 years from  Both sides have help from Native tribes, but natives are not happy about losing their land and way of life to European invaders  The Americans fight with the British out of allegiance to their king  After the battle of Quebec in 1759, the British get the upper hand in the war  The British win  The Treaty of Paris gave Britain complete control over Canada  Some of the French stayed and resisted British control.  Mainly, they wanted to stay French.  The Quebec Act in 1775 allowed the French to stay in British Canada and maintain their culture

French and Indian War

The Aftermath: Two Canadas Acadians Lower Canada and upper Canada  To stop the fighting between loyalists, Native Canadians, and the French Canada decide to split in two.  Upper Canada became home to English speaking people in what is now Ontario  Lower Canada became home to French speaking people in what is now Quebec.  This is when Canada started using the name Canada  Because of the British victory in the 7 years war many French were upset, but refused to leave  These people were known as the Acadians and the British forced them l\\to leave their homes.  Some went to Louisiana yet others refused to leave.  Canada became a safe haven for loyalists (people loyal to the King of England) after the Revolutionary War

Upper and Lower Canada – the result of war
