Doodle Animal Portraits

Using a combination of contrast in color and pattern, you will create a portrait of an animal of your choice

Requirements 4-6 watercolor techniques Color scheme- focus on contrast 3-4 patterns demonstrating contrast

Choosing your animal and Creating Contour Choose an animal that you are interested in painting and create a contour drawing of that animal Contour line drawing: A contour drawing shows the outlines, shapes and edges of a scene, but omits fine detail, surface texture, color and tone Your sketch should show major changes in the value, form, and texture.

Steps 1.Brainstorm what animal you want to use for the project 2.Save and print using Student Common Drive 3.In sketchbook, create thumbnail sketches that are the contours of the animal you chose – Try 3 different compositions using the contour of your animal

4. Choose best contour arrangement and transfer to full page. 5. Plan out design with a focus on contrast – Color scheme – Pattern placement – Placement of Watercolor Technique

Color Schemes to Choose from Warm vs. Cool Complimentary Color Scheme Color Triad Color Scheme – A triadic color scheme uses colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel. – To use a triadic harmony successfully, the colors should be carefully balanced - let one color dominate and use the two others for accent. Split Complimentary Color Scheme – The split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement.

Creating Contrast with both Color & Pattern Contrast in color is best achieved with complimentary colors or Warm vs. Cool Colors Contrast in pattern is achieved by Spacing – Making patterns closer together creates darker value – Making patterns with more space in between marks creates lighter value Pattern can also create form and depth
