Goals of Anyone Can Save A Life Raise Awareness of SCA among school communities Teach the Warning Signs and Symptoms Teach Risk Factors Assist Schools in the development of an Emergency Action Plan for After School Practices and Events Offer CPR and AED Training Increase Public Access to and use of AEDs Create an awareness of the importance of the Pre- Participation Health Questionnaire.

Why Implement ‘Anyone Can Save a Life’ Schools are community gathering points Adults, a high risk population, are often present at a schools sporting events, fine art activities, community programs and other events. Strengthen the chain of survival by educating staff, and students on how to Save a Life You will be prepared to respond

What Happens in the Body when one suffers from SCA? 1.Electrical system in the heart malfunctions 2.Heart unexpectedly and abruptly stops beating 3.Not the same as a heart attack 4.Usually caused by an abnormal heart rhythm called Ventricular Fibrillation 5.Results in death if not treated immediately.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Statistics SCA is the leading cause of death in high school athletes (Source - Dr. Barry Maron and Associates) As many as 150 student-athletes will die every year from SCA MN statistics 265,000 people suffer from SCA each year (Source – AHA)

Emergency Preparedness is not only for the school day… 20% of the U.S. population congregates on school grounds. Schools have an Emergency Action Plan for responding to school day emergencies. 90% have at least one AED 60% in MN didn’t have a plan for times when school isn’t in session.

Student Response Teams 911 Team Responsible for calling 911 Providing EMS with the details including the location and nearest access point to the victim. Aware of the nearest accessible landline phone. Meet EMS at designated location

Student Response Teams AED Retrieval Team Retrieving the AED bringing it to the victim as quickly as possible. Aware of the location of the nearest AED. Responsible for locating the Athletic Trainer if there is one on staff.
