Alternative Resources Fossil fuels are needed to produce most of the electricity we use today. This causes problems for our environment.

If we are to continue with our current lifestyle we need to find alternative sources for our electricity. Alternative Resources

Splitting the Atom Nuclear energy is an alternative source of energy that is derived from the nuclei of atoms.

Fission Fission is the process in which the nuclei of radioactive atoms are split.

Fission The process of fission produces a tremendous amount of energy.

Nuclear Power Plants There are more than 400 nuclear power plants in operation around the world.

Nuclear Power Plants 75% of France’s electricity comes from nuclear energy. The U.S. gets less than 10% electricity from nuclear energy.

Pros for Nuclear Energy Nuclear power plants provide alternative sources of energy without the problems that come from using fossil fuels.

Cons for Nuclear Energy Nuclear power plants produce dangerous waste. This waste is radioactive. These must be stored until it is no longer radioactive. This could take as long as a thousand years. There is no nuclear waste around here!

Radioactive Symbol The symbol of nuclear waste represents radioactivity. You should use precautions to approach an area marked with this symbol.

Water and Nuclear Power Nuclear power plants generate a large amount of heat and must be cooled using water.

If the cooling system would stop working the plant would overheat. This could cause the reactor to melt and release the radiation into the environment. Water and Nuclear Power

Fusion Another nuclear source for energy is called fusion. Fusion is the joining of nuclei of small atoms to form larger ones.

Fusion This is the same process that the Sun uses to produce energy.

Fusion The main advantage is that fusion produces few dangerous wastes.

Fusion The main disadvantage is that very high temperatures are required for the reaction to take place.

Fusion No known material can withstand this amount of heat. So far fusion reactions have been limited to laboratory experiments.
