Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology With Mrs. Jackson This presentation is posted on my website if you miss anything

Personal Information A member of the La Serna Science Department since UCI graduate with a B.S. in Biology Married and have 3 sons Mark, 16 years old Luke, 14 years old John, 14 years old

Purpose of this Course This course is designed for those students interested in pursuing a career in a medical field or health related field.

It helps develop a good foundation about the parts of the human body and how they work together.

This class is also for those students simply wanting to learn a course of study relevant to their lives.

This class will educate the student on how their bodies work and how to best take care of it.

Supports Next Generation Science Standards

The Rigors of this Course This is a challenging course with lots of vocabulary and concepts. It is very similar to a foreign language class with the amount of new terms, that are mainly derived from Latin. It involves a great deal of memorization.

The Course Sequence All of the body systems, such as the muscular system and the digestive system, will be covered over the course of the year. The sequence mirrors the order of the chapters in the text book which Looks like this and a copy should be kept at home – we have a class set here.

Grading Late work is ½ credit and due within a week of original assigned date given (ultimate last date to accept late work will be posted in Aeries!!). How it appears in Aeries via Student view

(30%)Tests –. There are no retakes for tests! (see final info) (20%)Quizzes – Every Friday and some weeks may include two quizzes. (Root Word Quizzes this semester) (15%)Labs –Answers are scored for accuracy and reasonableness of answers (not just credit for filling it in) Grading Categories

(10%) Test Review – Assigned by the teacher and will include a variety of study strategies (ie. Flash cards, thinking maps, outlines, QUIZLET, etc.) (10%)Final – You can use your final to replace a poor test score as a way of test redemption. (5%) FRQ – Short free response quizzes (5%)Warm ups/participation

(5%)Unit Packets *Individual assignment due dates are posted on side board. *Packets are due on the day of the test. *Late packets will only receive half credit and only will be awarded credit if turned in by the ultimate due date posted on Aeries.

At the start of each new unit, students are given a unit packet. Some pages are notes and some are homework worksheets. No stamps are given during the unit due to time constraints and large class sizes, but you should check packet occasionally to see progress is being made. I will post due dates on Google Classroom (most likely in the agenda section)

Outside Class Resources I will use Google Classroom to post agendas, notes etc (moving away from website) Students need to sign in to my QUIZLET and will have to use it to study for tests (flashcard sets are already there) and will get points for the completed activities

Other Info. No test or quiz retakes, but there will be a test redemption using the final. Missed labs must be made up within a week, likewise for missed quizzes or tests (or score will remain as a zero) during tutorial Make up tests are short answer format. Missed root quizzes will be made on a quiz retake day at end of semester

Grade Updates You should be able to view grades through Aeries –Please, consider doing grade checks on Friday afternoon with consequences imposed during the weekend for zeroes (of course, not those due to absences!) and other very low scores You should receive a report mailed home 4 times per semester

Please! Make sure your in Aeries is correct, I get a lot of undeliverable messages returned!

Other Information Please, consider becoming a member of Friends of La Serna (FOLS) –Membership is $25 –Direct donation to “Anatomy” and this class will receive $20 from your membership to purchase dissection specimens and more. –Through the years, we have received these items from Friends Dissection specimens Sound meters Body fat analyzers CPR mannequins, which allowed us last year to certify over 60 La Serna students! A full size skeleton Models of organs DVD’s Library cart

Fieldtrip –Scheduled in November to visit the L.A. Chiropractic College’s Anatomy Lab –Space is limited to the top 10 students/class. –There is about a $25 fee involved –This is an optional field trip –Students revolve through stations. Stations have human specimens and college students present the information to them.

Parent-Teacher Communication is the quickest way to get a response from me. (link on school website)

Thank you for attending Back to School Night!
