Specific Duties Plan, manage, or perform analysis, research, design, development, fabrication, installation, modification, or sustainment of systems or systems components across the entire life cycle; Apply most or all of the DoD Systems Engineering Technical Processes or Technical Management Processes integrating multiple domains (analytic or engineering specialties) at a system or systems-of-systems level.

CLASSIFICATION – UNCLASSIFIED Systems Engineering Initiatives 04/13/10 Page-18 Proposed Way Ahead (1) There is lots of confusion about SPRDE career field because it is very broad and diverse Need better way to describe and manage SPRDE workforce development Proposal: Establish Separate Career Fields –SPRDE – Science &Technology Manager becomes Science &Technology Manager –SPRDE – Program Systems Engineer becomes Program Systems Engineer –SPRDE – Systems Engineering renamed to SPRDE

CLASSIFICATION – UNCLASSIFIED Systems Engineering Initiatives 04/13/10 Page-19 Proposed Way Ahead (2) Science &Technology Manager –Leads and/or manages science and technology activities including basic research, applied research and/or advanced technology development; may also provide direct support to acquisition program managers. –Develop overall program goals using S&T funds. –Acquire the services of scientists, engineers and technical support personnel, experts in their fields, to perform science and technology research for DoD. –Provide funds and oversee S&T performers including universities, industry, and Federal Government organizations. –Interface with the technology customer(s) to expedite the transition of technology to the user.

CLASSIFICATION – UNCLASSIFIED Systems Engineering Initiatives 04/13/10 Page-20 Proposed Way Ahead (3) Program Systems Engineer –Select cadre of more experienced systems engineers with cross- disciplinary technical skills grounded in broad-based education, training and experience who are targeted for key leader positions such as Lead Program Systems Engineer. SPRDE –A wide range of members from different disciplines and backgrounds. –Workforce members may hold positions such as systems engineer, project officer, project engineer, scientist, supervising project engineer, computer engineer/scientist, operations research analyst, software engineer, naval architect, etc. –Workforce members may also hold specialty engineering positions such as materials or structures engineer, reliability engineer, designing engineer, cost engineer, etc.
