General rules Familiarise yourself with the situation at the installation or construction site where you are going to work as soon as possible Make sure you know who and what is where Take the precautionary measures that are appropriate to the work you are going to carry out Set aside enough time for safety: consider what could go wrong and whether you have done everything you can to prevent hazardous situations Remain alert at all times when you are working. If in any doubt, always ask or suspend activities where necessary.

Mercury Mercury occurs naturally in gaseous compounds. It is also produced to a greater or lesser degree during the extraction of natural gas. Mercury can occur in metallic form (specifically in acid gas environments or as mercury salts) in all gas extraction and production installations, as well as in pipelines, filters, scrubbers and vessels. It can also occur in the sludge during pigging operations. Mercury is extremely harmful to health and to the environment. This calls for maximum care and alertness. What personal protection equipment to use? Use the correct personal protection equipment in the prescribed way (statutory obligation) and keep them in good condition. You will then protect yourself, others and the environment. Depending on the results of measurements taken with a mercury vapour monitor, the following actions should be taken per mercury vapour concentration measured: < 0.02 mg/m3 use of basic PPE package for activities involving mercury =>0.02 basic PPE package + ABEKHgP3 full-face mask or independent breathing apparatus The basic PPE package for work involving mercury in this case consists of: standard overalls liquid-resistant disposable overalls (PE) gloves (Viton) safety boots (PU) helmet eye protectors Be aware: the manager or supervisor will prescribe extra PPE for work involving specific risks. These will then form part of the work permit.

Preventing contamination Make use of the rinsing tubs / decontamination unit Dispose of clothing (potentially) contaminated with mercury in the appropriate waste unit Ditto used (and capped) candle filters Clean boots in accordance with the prescribed procedure During the work Wear the correct PPE in the prescribed way Ensure that there is good ventilation Respect safety zones (red and white warning tape) Mercury measurements must be repeated throughout the day If you suspect that mercury may be present Leave the workplace immediately Notify the permit-holder / location supervisor

Personal hygiene Always wash your hands with plenty of soap and water: before each break before eating and drinking before and after using the lavatory before smoking before leaving the site What to do in the event of a leak If you suspect the presence of mercury, stop all work and report any leaks immediately to the licenseholder / site supervisor

What are the dangers associated with mercury?
