ESRI Conference Summary AIMS Coordinators meeting 2010

Conference Overview Whole system Community basemap – note webinar Community basemap Imagery is core to ArcGIS 10 arcgis.com instead of esri.com Little talk of anything past 10

Resources Pre-Conference Q&A Plenary Videos Lightning Talks Conference Proceedings New in ArcGIS video demos Help documentation – 75% has been rewritten/updated – 3 “Libraries” – Essentials, Professional, Administrator

Training Online Training Seminars Live Training Seminar - Visualizing and Analyzing Imagery with ArcGIS 10 - Today Live Training Seminar Day seminar – Increase Productivity with ArcGIS 10 - Oct Day seminar

Shannon’s 10 in 2010 list 10.Basemap layers 9.? 8.? 7.? 6.? 5.? 4.? 3.? 2.? 1.?

#10 – Basemap layers Basemap and accelerated raster layers – allow navigation of the map without having to wait for the map to redraw. – display computed once and reused many times. – Continuous pan and zoom

Shannon’s 10 in 2010 list 10.Basemap layers 9.? 8.? 7.? 6.? 5.? 4.? 3.? 2.? 1.?

#9 - User interface enhancements Table tabs Marker search Add-ins Table of contents New selection tools

#9 - User interface enhancements Table tabs Marker search Add-ins Table of contents New selection tools

#8 - Image Analysis and classification windows Enhance images and apply common image processing techniques Facilitate image classification Define on-the-fly processing Mask Clip Edge Detection

#7 - Time-aware layers Plats example DateRecord >= '2010/01/01‘ and <= ‘2010/08/10’ , Export

#6 - Geoprocessing tools execute in the background Queue up tools to run Continue working One runs at a time Cannot start edit session Affected layers locked All processes run in foreground during edit sessions

Shannon’s 10 in 2010 list 10.Basemap layers 9.User interface enhancements - symbol search, tabbed tables, addins 8.Image Analysis and classification windows 7.Time-aware layers 6.Geoprocessing tools execute in the background 5.DDP 4.? 3.? 2.? 1.?

#5 – DDP

#5 - DDP

#4 - Query Layers Allows you to use the power of SQL Similar to ArcSDE view Not persistent in the database Won’t register with the geodatabase (won’t see in Catalog) Works like any other layer in Arcmap

#4 - Query Layers

#3 - Editing Feature templates Snapping environment redesigned Popup context toolbars Easier to start edit session Vertices, Annotation, parcels, etc

#2 - Embedded windows Pin open Autohide/expand Map doesn’t refresh Catalog Identify Search Results Image Analysis

Shannon’s 10 in 2010 list 10.Basemap layers 9.User interface enhancements - symbol search, tabbed tables, addins 8.Image Analysis and classification windows? 7.Time-aware layers 6.Geoprocessing tools execute in the background 5.DDP 4.Query Layers 3.Editing - templates, defaults, popup context menu, toolbars, etc 2.Embedded catalog and other windows 1.????

#1 - arcpy New python module Useful for altering layer sources, updating symbology, managing data frames and elements, generating reports, printing, exporting Can publish scripts as geoprocessing tools on ArcGIS server. Limitations: No “New Map” function, no “Save as”, No “New object” function (north arrow, legend, etc)

Arcpy.mapping example It’s as simple as: – Import arcpy.mapping – mxd = arcpy.mapping.MapDocument(r"CURRENT") – arcpy.mapping.ExportToPDF(mxd,r"D:\workspace\testpdf.pdf")

Shannon’s 10 in 2010 list 10.Basemap layers 9.User interface enhancements - symbol search, tabbed tables, addins 8.Image Analysis and classification windows? 7.Time-aware layers 6.Geoprocessing tools execute in the background 5.DDP 4.Query Layers 3.Editing - templates, defaults, popup context menu, toolbars, etc 2.Embedded catalog and other windows 1.Arcpy.mapping

Honorable mentions? New topology rules Network and Geometric Network enhancements 3D visualization and editing Add basemap/ArcGIS Online

Highlighted Sessions 1.Public Utility Application templates 2.Using ArcGIS server in the Amazon cloud 3.What’s new in the geodatabase at 10 4.What’s new in ArcGIS Server 10

1.Public Utility Application templates Include: – Geodatabase schema – Sample datasets – Maps – Layers – Editing workflows Planning, project costs, mobile, etc

2.Using ArcGIS server in the Amazon cloud Allow you to avoid IT problems and move faster on projects Allow you to scale if and when you need the hardware Bring ArcGIS server license with you and data License for 1 mo, 3 mo, or 1 year

3.What’s new in the geodatabase at 10 Open API for file GDB Query Layers Geometric Network improvements – improved creation and loading Network data improvements – support for versioning and partial rebuilds and time. Location/Allocation type. Replication improvements

4.What’s new in ArcGIS Server 10 Compact cache – easier to move, create, update and delete. Mixed transparency allowed 150 new GP tools Map services now support stand alone tables and time animation (exposed on rest point) Feature service MSD support for maplex, cartographic representations, and query Layers added and lock problem solved.

Upgrading Notes Must download or request DVD New license manager VBA is a separate license but is still available Existing python scripts should be OK (2.6) ArcSDE needs to have ArcCatalog 10 to upgrade database during post install Some tool names and menus have changed and additional training may be necessary (addxy data, annotation editing)

Preliminary Issues 9.3 Tfwx aren’t read by 10? Plat application. FGDC Metadata may require separate upgrade Need to investigate use of default database that is associated with MXD’s in a multi-user environment. ArcGIS10 desktop cannot be used to administer older servers

Initial problems Addin Manager customizations are overwritten by ArcMap/Catalog Metadata upgrade does not recognize valid feature classes Arcpy.mappingListLayers()[0].replaceDataSour ce function does not replace the feature class name correctly for shp or SDE.

JOCO Considerations RTA – manatron is built on 9.3 JCW – GBA is built on 9.3 These may not have updates very soon and will require 9.3 desktop and SDE until the versions are released. LP360 - ?? Geopdf – may replace with functionality built into ArcGIS

AIMS upgrade plan ArcSDE will need to be last. We plan to upgrade server and desktop first. VBA has been converted to.Net. FME requires service pack 2 Debating about altering python scripts to remove references to arcgis.scripting, Currently we are testing desktop.

ESRI Connection Chart ArcSDE Compatibility Matrix Highlights- – Older client applications are not supported with newer versions of ArcSDE geodatabases (see exception for ArcGIS 9.2 below). For example, ArcGIS 9.3 cannot connect to and use ArcSDE 10 geodatabases. – Newer client applications can make application server connections to and use older versions of ArcSDE geodatabases as long as the new client does not try to use new functionality the older geodatabase would not understand. – Pre-10 geodatabases do not support the new and improved functions of ArcGIS 10 geodatabases such as: 6 new topology rules and support for larger scale geometric networks. – ArcGIS 10 can make direct connects to ArcSDE 9.3.1, 9.3, and 9.2 geodatabases.

ArcGIS Server Compatibility “Web applications built at previous versions will not automatically work in the latest software release. ArcGIS Server Manager will prompt to you to migrate older Web applications.” ArcGIS Server 10 Migration
