Reasons for Establishing Colonies  Religion - Freedom to practice their own religion.  The Economy - Find riches for their countries.

Roanoke Island (The First Colony in The New World)  Located off the coast of what is North Carolina today.  Established by the English.  Goal was to help the English economy.  Wanted to expand trade and wealth. Roanoke Island

“The Lost Colony”  Inadequate supplies.  Unfriendly Native Americans  English supply ships arrived in 1590 to find that the settlement was abandoned.  400 Years later, we still do not know exactly what happened to Roanoke.

Jamestown  Founded in  England’s first successful permanent settlement in North America.  Founded for economic reasons. Jamestown Information

The Virginia Company  Made up of a group of English businessmen.  King James I approved the creation of the group.  Lead by Captain John Smith.  Helped Jamestown become successful and prosperous.

The Pilgrims  Sailed on a ship known as The Mayflower.  Landed on the shores of present day Massachusetts.  Not wanting to practice the religion of England was considered disobedient to the king.  The Pilgrims needed to leave England to be able to practice their own religion freely  Because of this, they are commonly called “Separatists”.

Plymouth Colony  The second successful English colony.  Founded in 1620 to provide a safe place to practice religion.  Founded by the Pilgrims. Plymouth Colony

Massachusetts Bay Colony  Founded in 1630 (10 years after the Pilgrims).  Founded by the Puritans.  Founded for religious reasons. Seal of The Massachusetts Bay Colony

The Puritans  Founded The Massachusetts Bay Colony for religious reasons.  Their original goal was to change The Church of England instead of separating from it.  When change did not take place, they decided to leave England and sail to Massachusetts.

The Quakers  50 years after the Puritans, the Quakers established their settlement.  Located in Pennsylvania. William Penn founded this colony to give Quakers a safe place to practice their religion.  Believed in equality, integrity, simplicity, and peace. Quaker Information

The Last American Colony  Georgia is known as The Last American Colony.  Founded in Which was about 30 years after The Quakers settled in Pennsylvania.  Created for economic reasons.  Established by people who wanted to escape being placed in jail for not paying their debts.
