Many candidates were in the running for the newly vacant position but former Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda was able to secure a victory in a run off election. His plans for Japan include rebuilding Japan and doubling the sales tax to jump start Japan’s economy. His election to office is significant because he is the sixth prime minister in five years and he stresses the importance of Japan-US security alliance.
