Presentation transcript:

Conservation districts are directly affected by actions of federal and state legislators. Sometimes there is a need for new legislation to address a natural resource issue. Sometimes there are concerns over funding for district and natural resource programs. Sometimes it is necessary for conservation districts to take action to educate, inform and persuade other elected officials.

Build a relationship before you have a need of your legislator’s help. Meet with your legislators to get acquainted. Legislator’s have more time to meet while at home in their legislative district than during session. Personal meetings will not be easily forgotten. Keep the meeting professional. Your legislator is more likely to listen if they know who you are and about your conservation district’s work. Invite your legislator to attend a conservation district meeting or special event. Follow up your meeting with and or phone call.

Visit in person, call or send an . Address your legislator properly and be sure spelling is correct. Identify yourself, get to the point immediately, ask for specific action, and explain why you're asking for support. Be reasonably brief. If you do not have an answer, do not improvise. Get back in touch when you have the correct information. Use your own words- not a form letter. Time the arrival of your letter while the bill or issue is still in committee and there is time for effective action.

Be constructive and offer an alternative approach. Write a letter of appreciation when you feel your legislator has done a good job. On any one issue, even a few letters to one legislator can have an important impact. Positive thinking and positive actions are most effective when influencing legislators. Be confident, know your issues and be positive. Don’t be offended speak or meet with a staffer. For information on state legislatures visit:
