Physical and Man-made Features of the United States Fourth grade Social Studies

The Atlantic Coastal Plain The Atlantic Coastal Plain is the flat stretch of land that borders the Atlantic Ocean. It is approximately 2,200 miles long, stretching from New York, through the southeast United States.

The Atlantic Coastal Plains covers the following states… New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Alabama Florida

The Great Plains The Great Plains are the broad expanse of prairie which lie west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The region is about 500 miles east to west and 2,000 miles north to south.

The Great Plains covers the following states… Colorado Kansas Montana Nebraska New Mexico North Dakota Oklahoma South Dakota Texas Wyoming

The Continental Divide The Continental Divide, also called the Great Divide, is a natural boundary line separating waters that flow into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico from those that flow into the Pacific Ocean. It runs north-south from Alaska to northwestern South America.

The Great Basin The Great Basin is a large, arid region of the western United States. Its boundaries are the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Death Valley Death Valley is a desert located in the southwestern United States. It is the lowest, driest, and hottest location in North America.

The Gulf of Mexico The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world. Considered a smaller part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is an ocean basin largely surrounded by the North American continent and the island of Cuba.

The St. Lawrence River Saint Lawrence River is a large river flowing approximately from southwest to northeast of North America, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

The Great Lakes The Great Lakes are a chain of freshwater lakes located in eastern North America. Consisting of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth.
