1. I NTRODUCTION AU Declaration on Land Crucial role of land in Africa’s Development Establishment of strong land governance system Ethiopia committed for the implementation of AU declaration on land Universities play a critical role in building the capacity of implementing institutions and then long-term development of the nation

Bahir Dar University Vision: To be one of the premier education and research universities in Africa by 2025 Three Pillar responsibilities Training / Human capital and professional development Knowledge generation and adaptation through research and innovation Community Service or outreach services and collaboration and partnership

3. BDU’ S L INKAGES AND C OLLABORATIVE W ORKS IN THE LAND SECTOR Bahir Dar University is partnering with: - Federal Government - National Regional States - International institutions 3.1. Amahra Regional State Engagements Participates in the governance board of the university as member and chair The regional state in collaboration with SIDA-Sweden financially supported the university to train experts in LA for their MSC

C ONT ……. The regional state initiated and supported ( technical and financial) the university for the establishment of Land Administration institute. The government send experts to the university for short term and long term training The government has been requesting the university to do some consultancy works on priority research areas of the region Collaborated for the implementation of joint research projects

3.2. E NGAGEMENTS WITH THE LA&U D IRECTORATE LAND/USAID Project : Conducted an assessment on Implementation problems of the FDRE and ANRS Rural Land Laws in Amhara Region Organized short term training (Judges, Public prosecutors & Senior LA Experts) and prepare training materials on Federal and Regional Land Laws Sponsored MSc Level training Supported the ETHIOLANDNET program REILA Sponsored MSc training and research support to 54 students (Amhara, Benishangul, EMA, Oromia) LIFT/M4P Mapping of Research Needs on Land Tenure Issues in Ethiopia Assessment of the Impact of different land policies on Farmers: Oromiya and Amhara Regional States

3.2. E NGAGEMENTS CONT … LPI/GIZ - Involve and contribute in the development of “Guiding Principle on Large Scale Land Based Investment in Africa” - Involve and contribute in the development of “Best Practice of Land Administration Practices in Africa” World Bank -Contribution to the Land Governance Analysis Framework (LGAF) - Land Dispute Classification and Reporting System EU-it4land Project (consortium of universities from Belgium, Netherland, Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda). GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS FOR LAND TENURE SECURITY IN EAST AFRICA

3.3. ENGAGEMENTS WITH THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT & HOUSING IMPLEMENTATION OF URBAN LAND ADJUDICATION AND REGISTRATION Training of urban land experts from major cities of Ethiopia Training includes land surveying, GIS, legal process of Adjudication an Registration of Urban Land Registration Quality assurance on CoC training in Ethiopia Law drafting process Involved in drafting legislation and curriculum development on the introduction of urban land taxation system

L ESSONS Universities need to join hands with governments to address critical research and capacity needs Universities should prove they are relevant for the government and the society
