Universal Design for Learning

UDL is an educational framework and set of principles that maximizes learning opportunities for all learners and it is based on three guiding principles. These principles can be applied to the overall design of a course and/or curriculum as well as to specific instructional strategies. Recall that each principle has a set of detailed guidelines, which provide an evidence-based approach to understanding how learning can be improved through tools and resources. Each principle is aimed at helping educators improve how information is presented so as to engage students and create inclusive assessments and evaluations (Cast, 2010).

Educators can use the UDL model to enhance their instruction; by Offering students the best quality of learning. The UDL framework sets the foundation for effective instruction, to aide in endless possibilities of learning. This UDL framework considers the learning styles, preferences and abilities of students (Cast, 2010). With this consideration in mind, teachers are able to create a learning community that encourages learning that appears seamless.

Principle 1:Provide Multiple Means of Representation—(the “what” of learning). Principle 2:Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression—(the “how” of learning) Principle 3:Provide Multiple Means of Engagement —(the “why” of learning). UDL impacts student learning through the intentionality of the teacher. The UDL model help to create lessons that considers differences, preferences and needs before developing a instructional plan. A variety of methods and tools are used, to meet the developmental needs of each learner without excluding them (Cast, 2010).

Technology and UDL for All Learners

The vision of Rose C. Berry is to be a premier, innovative school that prepares all children for college and career journeys. The mission of Rose C. Berry Career and Technical Education is to equip students by offering them practical learning in sharpening Skills and learning new ones, that will not only benefit them academically but also in their Future career paths. School Goals -To provide a broad-based yet in-depth foundation in information technology (IT) and help students develop critical skills and extensive knowledge necessary in this field. -To equip technology-literate students; by offering classes on problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and teamwork.

We believe that Career and Technical Education gives students the opportunity to: Get a head start in preparing for collage and career paths. Participate in practical hands on training of the students choice. Develop skills that will aide students in cohabiting in the workplace, Interact through learning activities, internships, shadowing that breathes real world experiences. Develop competencies for the workplace and college major.

Technology and 21 st Century Skills

Interaction One parent will be chosen to demonstrate the effects of UDL implemented in the learning environment. The parent will cover his/her ears with headphones to block out all sound. Then I will begin to read some material aloud and once I’m done, I will ask the parent how did they feel? What negative feelings or thoughts did you feel when you couldn't hear? Imagine that you’re in a classroom of students who can hear and you were the only one who couldn’t? These questions are meant to provoke thought and reflections. The parent will place the headphones back on their ears and a Ipad with the reading material will be provide to them to read and follow along in class. After this exercise, I will ask the parent how they felt with having technology to help them with their learning.

The skill that can be used with in the course word of “Business Management” for high school student is, “Interpersonal Skills”. During this class, students are taught eight core areas, Which are: Communication skills, Time management and organization, Goal setting, Delegating, Public speaking and presentation building, Relationship building, Passion and determination. Technology is addressed through the use of Ipads, smartboard, software etc. The use of technology combined with 21 st century skills, will prepare students to thrive in their chosen career fields; by giving them access to real life/work applications. The principles of UDL support career and technical education by providing students with multiple means of representation, engagement, action and expression (Edyburn, 2013). The multiple means provided for students gives them an advantage of learning and receiving knowledge, which enables them to have access to various means of learning and engagement.

21st-Century Skills Mastering core subject of English reading and writing skills Learning and innovation skills though communicating ideas and thoughts though various methods of writing Technology skills by writing in various formats; e- mail, blogs, word documents, etc. Life and career skills by learning writing skills that support job placement opportunities (resumes, office correspondence, etc.) Information Technology Literacy Students practice using various web sites & tools in digital community Express ideas via laptops, tablets, iPads, and other smart devices (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, n.d.).
