Purpose of Parent Meeting The 4 C’s:  Community  Communication  Consistency  Core courses and choices

Community  Role of 9 th grade principal and counselor  We act as a team.  “What is best for students?”  “Is it possible?”  Principal  Discipline, progress monitoring, “issues”  Counselor  Scheduling, progress monitoring, “issues”  Freshman Grade Level Team  A group of teachers that primarily teach freshmen.  Ease the transition to high school.  Monthly meetings to discuss kids.  Weekly progress monitoring.

Communication  Parent Involvement  We welcome and want your input and involvement.  2 way process  Feel free to initiate contact with Mr. Norris, Mrs. Bennewitz, and teachers.  48 hours (school hours) in the like manner of communication.  Our expectation is that teachers will initiate communicate with you as needed:  Failing Grades  Behavior/ Positive and Negative  I will initiate communication for:  Important upcoming events  OSS/ISS  Concerns

Consistency  Huge Priority  Primary reason for the Freshman Grade Level Team  Focus for  Common Policies  Common Expectations  Common Support  Teacher who teach the same course (especially core)  All teachers are highly qualified to teach their subjects  PLC’s  Same standards  Common Assessments

Core Courses and Choices  What is new for  Registration process (alternates, requests and timeline)  Elective focus  Registration form versus actual schedule

New for  Schedule is being adjusted to meet the state requirements for Response to Intervention (RTI) and the opportunity for FHS students to take classes at Byington-Solway  Byington-Solway: students will be able to ride a bus to take classes(CTE) for ½ day at Byington.  Focus area offerings:  ElectromechanicalWeldingDiesel Mechanics  PlumbingElectrical SystemsConstructionFire Science  AV Production Criminal JusticeEarly ChildhoodCosmetology

Registration Process  Based on test scores and 8 th grade teacher rec’s  Not all honors courses are equal—> high school honors courses are more demanding than middle school honors courses  Consider extracurricular activities and other commitments when considering core class placement  Alternates-very important students select alternate electives. Not every student will get their first choice electives. Will make every effort to get students in at least one of their elective focus area courses

Registration Timeline  Requests entered first week of April  Once the master schedule is set and all requests are entered students are “scheduled” based on grade level (seniors, juniors…)  Grade level counselors then go through each students’ schedule to ensure schedules are complete (8 classes) and balanced.  Schedules go live in ASPEN early June

Elective Focus  Each student is required to have an elective focus for graduation.  Math/Science  Humanities  Fine Arts  Human Services  NJROTC  AP or Dual Enrollment  Physical Fitness  CTE and Business  Byington-Solway

Elective Focus  Students must have 3 courses that fall in the linear focus path

What a schedule will look like  Course requests versus actual schedule  Very important to list alternates they want to take— good chance student will be placed in at least one alternate course  Priority is appropriate core classes  other graduation requirements  elective focus path of study

Requests Versus Actual Schedule  Requests versus schedule:  Principles of Engineering  Art 1  Digital Arts 1  History of Rock/Roll(Alternate)  Info Tech Foundations(Alternate)  Computer Applications(Alternate)
