Fire Extinguishers Class A - paper, wood, cloth, rubber, and certain plastics. Class B - gasoline, paint thinner, kitchen grease, propane, and acetylene. Fire Extinguisher Operation PASS Pull……………the handle retaining pin. Aim…………...the nozzle at the base of the flame. Squeeze……..the valve handle. Sweep………..the nozzle back and forth.

Alarms PA system (Main, Souch & Patricia Campuses) - Evacuation Zone Alarm. (Female voice) - Adjacent Zone Warning. (Male voice) - All clear Announcement. (Male voice) Intermittent Tone (If the PA system fails)

In the event of a fire Activate alarm Evacuate Do not use elevators Call 911 (from a safe location) Then call security Note: The 2400 is no longer being used

In the event of an evacuation For labs and shops Shut down hazardous operations prior to leaving Close doors and windows on your way out Direct students to the nearest muster points

Zones Each Zone has designated Fire Wardens Each Fire Warden has assigned areas within the Zone/wing or building Each Zone has a Chief Fire Warden

Dean/Director Responsibilities Assign Fire Wardens for the work areas they occupy Where they are the primary tenant assign a Chief Fire Warden for that zone Ensure Fire Wardens know their designated areas and have received appropriate training Ensure personnel are aware of their responsibilities during an emergency

Program Chair Responsibilities Provision for mobility challenged individuals in their programs Assign Two aides (if possible two back-ups) Ensure aides and individuals are aware of the evacuation procedure Inform Fire Wardens

Mobility Challenged Individuals Individuals (able to walk) can be assisted down the stairs Individuals in a wheel chair will be taken to a pre- determined safe area in the stairwell until they can safely be evacuated One aide will stay with them and the other one will notify Fire Wardens of their location

All NAIT Personnel Responsibilities Ensure you are aware of the evacuation procedures Know the location of emergency equipment and evacuation routes Evacuate by the safest and most direct route Assist with customer or visitor evacuation

Fire Warden’s Responsibilities BEFORE a fire alarm sounds: Be familiar with your assigned area Coordinate with other Wardens in your zone to determine search areas and responsibilities Notify your alternate when you are away Be aware of mobility challenged individuals in your area (Wardens should be notified by the programs)

Fire Warden’s Responsibilities WHEN a fire alarm sounds: Don your vest and check your area - Green for Chief Fire Warden Orange for Fire Warden Calmly request all persons to evacuate (Do not use elevators) Ensure all washrooms, offices, classrooms, and hallways are clear of occupants Assist with mobility challenged if necessary

Fire Warden’s Responsibilities When you are safely outside: Inform the Chief Fire Warden of the status of your area Ensure proper assembly at muster points Clear all emergency access routes Inform personnel to not re-enter the building Do not risk your personal safety for any person refusing to cooperate

Chief Fire Warden’s Responsibilities BEFORE a fire alarm sounds: Coordinate with Fire Wardens in your zone to: To determine search areas & reporting Chose a predetermined area where you will be Assigned duties: - Door monitoring - Keep fire lanes clear Keep a list of your Fire Wardens with your vest (recommended) Inform your alternate when you are away

Chief Fire Warden’s Responsibilities WHEN a fire alarm sounds: Don your vest, take your checklist, and go directly to your predetermined meeting point Fire Wardens convey the status of their areas Pass this information on to the Fire Department and Security

In Summary Become familiar with your designated area Fire alarm pull stations are at all main exits Call 911, then from a safe location to explain where the fire is located Evacuate the area via the closest safe exit Treat all alarms seriously
