Intro to Instructions Instructions unit/Auto Time Applied Communication

Understanding Clear Instructions Instructions tell how to perform a particular task by: –Considering the audience’s previous experience with the task –Breaking down the task into simple steps –Combining concise language with visuals

Uses for instructions Explain how to get to a particular location Perform an emergency procedure Complete an unfamiliar task (this is what we’ll focus on) Operate a piece of equipment

Standards of Good Instructions Tell what the instructions are for Present each step as a short command (starts with action verb) 1.Remove the dipstick. 2.Inspect the oil level. 3.Replace the dipstick.

Standards of Good Instructions Deliver numbered steps in the order they need to be performed to achieve the desired outcome

Standards of Good Instructions Include explanations after commands when needed – to clarify or justify –Remove the lug nuts in a star pattern. This means you will alternate lug nuts. –Put a thin line of oil on the new oil filter’s gasket. This provides a tight seal.
