AKI CSR PRIMARY SCHOOLS FLAGSHIP PROJECT-

Background. The obstacles to education for many children in different communities in Kenya have been recognized as the main barriers to social and economic progress. It is with this in mind that addressing low access to quality education in rural areas has become an urgent matter and opened a window of opportunity for corporate organizations to give back to the society. Many caring organizations are now condescending around the idea of universal right to education with particular emphasis to poor-resource and rural communities as the most effective way to uplift social and economic standards. For an insurance association like AKI which has been focusing on insurance education and awareness, investment in learning facilities such as primary schools provides a good opportunity to introduce to children the concept of insurance at a tender age. This will also inevitably create student’s interest in pursuing insurance as a career at the tertiary and university education and boost the number of young people in the insurance industry.

Project Objectives To enhance access to education and by extension enhance the welfare of the selected communities. The school will be branded with AKI logo and insurance messages to introduce children to the concept of insurance at a tender age and boost insurance education/ awareness in the selected community. The project would improve learning environment of the children, teachers etc. It will help the Insurance industry message reach counties and remote areas. This will in turn increase public awareness level.

Criteria for Selection Many schools have different needs especially in rural areas. The school to benefit from the project will be selected based on the following factors: The school should not be receiving any form of funding from any other sponsor; be it the national or local governments, organisations or Non -governmental organizations. The project should benefit a large part of the community around the school. The school should be located at a place preferred by the community and with wide catchment of pupils.

Type of Projects The project can be construction of a classroom, dormitory, toiled / wash rooms, administration block, dining hall or provision of solar water heaters, solar lighting, donation of desks/chairs, tables/forms, donation of water tanks, fencing of school with chain link, toilet etc. The Secretariat discussed the matter and felt that starting a school from class one and moving with it is also an option.

Type of the Project Primary Schools in various counties in Kenya face similar challenges, Some lack desks others need water Some need books Others a structure

Location and Duration of the Project Location of the Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni Baringo and Kwale Duration of the Project- The project will be anchored on AKI 5 Year’s Strategic plan ( ). Each Phase will be done in two and half years. The 1 st phase will start before June 2016.
