Presentation transcript:

Artificial Insemination A pistolet containing the thawed semen straw is inserted into the vagina and then guided into the cervix by means of a gloved hand in the rectum. The inseminating catheter is passed through the spiral folds of the cow's cervix into the uterus. Part of the semen is deposited just inside the uterus and the remainder in the cervix as the catheter is withdrawn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yvXowLh-Pg

Flowchart of A.I Complete the flowchart using the steps on how A.I. is performed

Flowchart of A.I Pistolet is inserted into vagina Hand in rectum to locate cervix Pistolet is inserted into vagina Pistolet is guided towards cervix using the hand in the rectum Pistolet passes through cervix into uterus Semen is deposited slowly into uterus Pistolet is taken out Flowchart of A.I

Sperm Collection http://youtu.be/tYeu2fG87T4 The sperm from one bull can impregnate 300-1000 cows.

Advantages of A.I. Using the Brainstorm sheet, write all the benefits that artificial insemination offers.

Advantages of A.I. Using the Brainstorm sheet, write all the benefits that artificial insemination offers. Desirable characteristics can be introduced quickly to the herd Semen can be stored for many years There are minimal quarantine and disease problems Detailed performance of donor bull’s offspring can be evaluated Farmers do not need to keep bulls
