AYANDA P. KHUMALO MY EARLY READING LITERACY STORY

THE BEGINNING From a very tender young age(between 3-5) I would pretend I knew how to read and I would read my fathers newspaper using my thoughts and not even what was written in the paper.

S TARTING SCHOOL Starting school at the age of 4 words just became my favourite part of being in school(well and playing of course) I was never the child whose parents read bed time stories for or even read anything for at all.

Moving on to primary school, I finally learnt how to read and write. I was one of the best readers in my class, I could read very well and got very irritated when the other kids read slow. I would read ahead instead.

In primary, we had book day and prize giving day. I always got a book on both these days, my prizes were mostly for English. My first book was the first book of the book collection “the babysitters club”. Besides my teachers, this book taught me how to read, that’s when then the love of reading just flowed on.

From then on wards I knew I wanted to work with books and any other printed materials. I helped at the library in both primary and high school, I just loved being surrounded by so many books I could read during my free time. While others were sweating with sports outside, I was travelling from place to place and situation too situation in the different books I read everyday.

After matric, I was still confused on what to study. My sister and I went through the UP brochures and I found publishing! I then went ahead and researched more about publishing and applied. So far I am enjoying every single day of it, I have no regrets for choosing what I love!

T HE END I love publishing and I will keep reading!
