Genesis 11:24 – 14:24 I Will Make You A Great Nation

Isaiah 14:13–14 (NIV84) You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God…I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

Genesis 11: This is the account of Terah’s family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot. 28 But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living. 29 Meanwhile, Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah. (Milcah and her sister Iscah were daughters of Nahor’s brother Haran.)

Genesis 11:30 30 But Sarai was unable to become pregnant and had no children. “Exalted father” Abram means “Exalted father” “Princess” and Sarai means “Princess” Genesis 20:12 Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.

Genesis 11: One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram’s wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran’s child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there. 32 Terah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran.

Genesis 12:1-3 The L ORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”

Acts 7:2–4 (NIV84) Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran. 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’ 4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.

Hebrews 11:8 (NASB95) By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Joshua 24:2 (NASB95) Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the L ORD, the God of Israel, ‘From ancient times your fathers lived beyond the River, namely, Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods. Ur of the Chaldees was a city devoted to Nannar, the moon-god. Warren Wiersbe

Matthew 10:37 (NASB95) “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Genesis 18:19 (NASB95) “For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the L ORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the L ORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”

1 Corinthians 1:26–29 (NLT) 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

The Lord’s Promises to Abram I will make you a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous. (You are to) Be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you & I will curse those who treat you with contempt All families on earth will be blessed through you!

Genesis 12:4-6 4 So Abram departed as the L ORD had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan… inhabited by Canaanites.

“Abraham did not fully obey God. Instead of leaving his family, as he was commanded, Abraham took his father and his nephew Lot with him when he left Ur; and then he stayed at Haran until his father died. Whatever you bring with you from the old life into the new is likely to create problems.” Whatever you bring with you from the old life into the new is likely to create problems.” Warren Wiersbe

Genesis 12:7-8 7 Then the L ORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the L ORD, who had appeared to him. 8 After that, Abram traveled south and set up camp in the hill country, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built another altar and dedicated it to the L ORD, and he worshiped the L ORD.

Genesis 12: As he was approaching the border of Egypt, Abram said to his wife, Sarai, “Look, you are a very beautiful woman. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife. Let’s kill him; then we can have her!’ 13 So please tell them you are my sister. Then they will spare my life and treat me well because of their interest in you.”

Genesis 12: But the L ORD sent terrible plagues upon Pharaoh and his household because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 14 And sure enough, when Abram arrived in Egypt, everyone noticed Sarai’s beauty. 15 When the palace officials saw her, they sang her praises to Pharaoh, their king, and Sarai was taken into his palace. 16 Then Pharaoh gave Abram many gifts because of her— sheep, goats, cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels. 17 But the L ORD sent terrible plagues upon Pharaoh and his household because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

Genesis 20:13 (NASB95) “…it came about, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is the kindness which you will show to me: everywhere we go, say of me, He is my brother.’”

Genesis 13:6-7 6 But the land could not support both Abram and Lot with all their flocks and herds living so close together. 7 So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. (At that time Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land.)

Genesis 13:9 If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left.”

Genesis 13: Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley to the east of them. He went there with his flocks and servants and parted company with his uncle Abram… 13 But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the L ORD. Ezekiel 16:49 (NLT) Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door.

Genesis 13:12-13 Lot moved his tents to a place near Sodom and settled among the cities of the plain. 13 But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the L ORD. “In any given situation, what you are determines what you see, and what you see determines what you do.” Haddon Robinson

Genesis 13: I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession 14 After Lot had gone, the L ORD said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. 15 I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession.

Genesis 14:1 “About this time war broke out in the region. King Amraphel of Babylonia…”

Genesis 14:12-14 Abram the Hebrew 12 They also captured Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and carried off everything he owned. 13 But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies 14 When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household.

Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered. 18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.

Hebrews 7:1–2 (NASB95) by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.

Hebrews 5:5–10 (NASB95) So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, “Y OU ARE M Y S ON, T ODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN Y OU ”; 6 just as He says also in another passage, “Y OU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER A CCORDING TO THE ORDER OF M ELCHIZEDEK.” Psalm 110:4 (NKJV) The L ORD has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 5:7-10 (NAS95) 7 In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. 8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek…”

Hebrews 7 Please turn In Your Bible Hebrews 7:3 “Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.”

Genesis 14:19-20 “Blessed be Abram by El Elyon who is Creator of heaven and earth And blessed be El Elyon who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Genesis 14: The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.” 22 Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the L ORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’

Had Abraham not been on his guard, he would have fallen for this subtle temptation and would have taken all the glory away from God. The people would have said, “Abraham rescued Lot for what he could get out of it, not because of his faith and love. Abraham refuses to live in Sodom with Lot, but he enjoys the goods of Sodom just the same.” Abraham would have lost his testimony. Warren Wiersbe

Genesis 14: Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the L ORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’

Genesis 15:1 (NASB95) After these things the word of the L ORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.”
