Welcome to “Screencasts” with Tara Wein
Why I researched screencasts…. I had student that was going to be absent for a week at the end of the year, so I wanted a way to help her. I had a student on homebound and wanted to do more to help her than write out EVERYTHING!!! Another teacher was out during final review, so I wanted her kids to have access to the reviews.
What is Snagit? Snagit is a program that captures what is on the screen. It can be a video, or a webpage, or just what’s on the screen. Is Snagit the only program? No, there are many screen capture programs “out there”, but my research pointed me to snagit.
Who benefits from screencasts? Homebound students Students that know they will be absent & request the work early. Absent students Students that need a second look Pre-record for when you will be absent. Students that need to preview the lesson
What does it take to make a screencast? Snagit ($29.95 with education discount) Some sort of writing tablet. (around $20 – 100) **These are 1 time purchases**
I found these tablets on Amazon by searching “pen tablet usb”. I like these because they are cheaper & connect directly to your computer, no software needed. You can get wireless tablets, but they require bluetooth & software.
..\Documents\Snagit\big circle.mp4 Let’s look at a sample of one of last year’s screen casts.

If you want anybody to be able to view your screencast, use this setting.
Use this one if you want people to have to be given the address for this folder.
Use this one if you want people to have to have a password to access the folder. It’s the one I use.
This is the most secure setting, but you have to invitations to each person individually. Would be a pain.
Now you can see my new folder
If you need help me: I’m wanting to start some kind of forum or blog about screencasts for us to support each other. If you want to join, please me with “screencast” in the subject. Copies of the powerpoint can be found on my ecisd webpage.
