Notes (Hamnet) History: The only item pertaining to Midsummer Night's Dream listed in the Reid Catalogue of Cruikshank's Work is a woodcut, no.3564, which was designed by Cruikshank and engraved by T. Wright. The woodcut is a vignette and Reid notes that it was executed by Wright as a specimen of his craft, but never published. FSL has a copy of the woodcut (ART Vol. c87, no.15a) and this sketch may have been a preliminary design for the vignette. It is also possible that this was a preliminary sketch for a picture from MSND which Cruikshank exhibited at RA in Notes (Hamnet) On the verso is a ms. letter which is dated Aug (or 1857, the top of the paper being cut off). Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: This item, along with ART Box C955 no.55 and 56, was purchased from the sale of the collection of Samuel Henry Austin, held by the American Art Association, April 23-24, According to the catalog of the sale the item was originally part of a bound volume of Cruikshank drawings, formerly owned by John B.
