Module 3 Lesson 1: A Review

We talked about: 5 Ws and the H Inverted Pyramid Writing a lead Image Courtesy of Stuart Miles/FreeDigitalPhotos.net

5 Ws and the H Who What When Where Why How Image Courtesy of Master isolated images/FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Inverted Pyramid Most important information down to the least important information

Leads First sentence/paragraph of a news article Includes most important information Includes as many of the 5Ws & the H as possible Brief, specific, answers the question, “So what?”

Example Lead Ginger Spice said Sunday she is leaving the Spice Girls, but the all ‑ girl pop group will continue to perform with four members. Who - Spice Girls What - There will only be 4 performing members. When - Ginger said this on Sunday. Where - (England?) Why - Ginger Spice is leaving. How - They will continue to perform.

Remember... A news article is straight-forward and doesn’t include opinions or feelings of the author. A lead provides the readers with the information they need immediately. A news article that is organized correctly could end any time after the lead and still have the information needed.
