What is the longest running television sitcom?

The Simpsons (23 Seasons)

Learning Intentions Demonstrate an understanding of how television shows target a specific audience Show an understanding of how specific shows have successfully connected with a target audience

Friends Review What type of show is it? Is it exciting boring, why? What main characters do we see in this episode? Does this episode make you want to watch more? Who would like to watch this show? Do you think this is a good show, Why/Why Not?

Television Audience All Media texts are made for a particular audience We are likely to be interested in some media texts but not others Analysing a media text is much easier once you have identified a target audience as you can look for specific features

Who is the target audience of this show?

Friends (1994) Year olds, you will find people outside this age range that like this show. The network markets a show to their intended audience. How would you say that ‘Friends’ is targeted to this age range?

Target Audience Media producers identify the target audience during the planning stage for a media text, because it affects the shape of the text so much The term ‘Target Audience’ for media producers means ‘the audience we think we are making this product for There is usually a secondary target audience outside of the main intended audience

Intended Audience Media texts are produced with the intended viewer in mind. Factors that contribute to appealing to the audience are the. Content of the text – is it suitable/appropriate for the audience? Style of presentation - is it attractive to the audience and will the content be understood by them.

How do we break down the audience?

Gender The different interests that men and women share is one major factor that advertisers look at when finding a place for their product. Women are still considered to buy household and practical items Men are considered to be more fascinated with technology

What are some sitcoms that you can think are targeted to females?

What are some sitcoms that you can think of that are targeted to males?

Age Another important factor that advertisers look at is age. Someone who is 20 is going to have very different interests to someone that is 60 There is no point marketing a youth product in a show that is aimed at pensioners

Social Class and Lifestyle The income of the audience is another factor that advertisers look at Boston Legal while not a sitcom managed to stay on air for so long not because it had huge ratings but the audience it had earned on average over $100,000 Selling products to the correct audience is important and helped by the previous factors

What are three factors that advertisers look at when placing an advert?

Age Gender Life Style Social Class

Learning Intention Demonstrate an understanding of the process that advertisers go through when placing their product. Show an ability to apply advertising principles to sitcom shows.

Flight of the Conchords Recap Is Flight of the Conchords targeted to a specific gender? Why/Why Not Is Flight of the Conchords targeted towards a specific age? What is that age? Who do you think is the social class of Flight of the Conchords? Who do you think could be the secondary target audience?

Actual Audience Vs Intended Audience Star Wars was initially intended as a kids film. The target audience was children. The actual audience for Star Wars turned out to be adults.

Audience Reaction Different audiences have different reactions to the same text because of age, gender, social class, ethnic group, lifestyle, politics, religion, values, taste, education and so on. A text may be targeted at a certain audience, but other audiences will watch the text and have a different reaction to the text from the creators’ preferred reading.

Ways to interpret texts? A Preferred reading is the reading which the media producers want the audience to receive. A Negotiated reading is one where the audience accepts the meaning the media producers intend for the text but it changes some of the intentions of the text to suit its own position. An Oppositional reading is one where the audience reject the preferred reading of the text and interpret the text in a different way.

The Big Bang Theory (2007)

Target Audience Gender: Social Class: Age: Ethnicity: Interests:

Is the actual audience the same as the target audience? The actual target audience is men aged Why could the actual target audience be different to the intended?

Sitcoms target audience Sitcoms usually reflect different areas of society such as families and workplaces this is why they have such broad target audiences and why the gain such high ratings on TV

Rate Cards Is a document that provides information on the price and ratings share of shows on a television network. A rate card is provided and used by advertising companies The rate card is usually the max price an advertiser will pay and advertising companies will be provided better rates depending on the amount of space being purchased

Farmers advert for a sale they are having. Based on the Rate Card handed out which show would you choose to place this advert in. Why would you place it in your chosen show think about the price and target audience of the show.
