K-12 STEM Opportunities Conference Building PLTW Program Diversity Through Professionalism Thursday, March 31, :45p CST (11:45a MST) Simulcast Kimberly Jones Glenn PLTW Director of School Engagement West Central Region – Nebraska and Iowa

Need diverse teams for better end product.

SciGirls Seven: How to Engage Girls in STEM 1.Girls benefit from collaboration, especially when they can participate and communicate fairly. 2.Girls are motivated by projects they find personally relevant and meaningful. 3.Girls enjoy hands-on, open-ended projects and investigations. 4.Girls are motivated when they can approach projects in their own way, applying their creativity, unique talents, and preferred learning styles. 5.Girls' confidence and performance improves in response to specific, positive feedback on things they can control—such as effort, strategies, and behaviors. 6.Girls gain confidence and trust in their own reasoning when encouraged to think critically. 7.Girls benefit from relationships with role models and mentors.

The skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. Professionalism:

communications School website content School building content Value of the Elevator Speech Things to consider… Today we will briefly cover…

s to Learn By: The Short and To the Point? Hi, What's the word? Lastnameonly Today’s word is counterproductive. Counterproductive is the word. Consider carefully your signature line.

Hi, Will I be presenting at the conference? John and Joyce have ask me but I don't know. Thanks Apparently grammar is only for students…and John and Joyce are who? You are who? Again, consider carefully your signature line. s to Learn By: The Short and To the Point?

Jane Brott will be out of the office through March 18th. -- Jane Brott Director of Curriculum Anywhere Community Schools OK, JANE isn’t there? Who do I contact then? Hello? Hello? Write an out of office with efficiency and customer care in mind. s to Learn By: The Short and To the Point?

Good morning! I was wondering if you were interested/available to participate in the STEM Festival as in years past. Hope that all is well and I’ll hear from you soon! I know you seem happy and excited, but who are you? What STEM Festival? When is it? s to Learn By: Emoji’ing me Crazy

And a personal favorite… Thanks! s to Learn By: Emoji’ing me Crazy

What Does Your Website Say About PLTW? Iowa Data 23%Nothing 67%Some 10%Good Good = ease of finding information, quality material, informative to the user, links to PLTW videos and related

Or does it really not say much? Consider your site in relation to the Iowa data. Content quality is important, even Google thinks so. STEM is everywhere, all the time. PLTW is STEM. Making a difference in the world. What Does Your Website Say About PLTW?

It may say what STEM is for kids without intending to... STEM is just for the top performers. Access for some. STEM is for smart thinkers, students who love math, and nerds. Making stuff. STEM is difficult, all the time. PLTW is Industrial Technology with a little STEM.

What you didn’t say that still speaks volumes…

The following examples are real examples, but identities have been altered for the sake of being kind and allowing anonymity.

Number 10 Pop Can Pyramid

Number 9 Chickens in Cages

Number 8 Life-sized poster of Tim the Tool Man Taylor stating… “WARNING: MAN WITH BIG TOOL COMING THROUGH!”

Number 7 “So, if I just throw some big pink fluffy pillows around, it will girl-up the place enough for ya?”

Number 6 Black-walled classroom with flame accent wall.

Number 5 Sawblade clock next to the pinup-girl tool calendar.

Number 4 BUT I LOVE MY ALMA MATER! Celebrate diversity. Be motivational. Be informative.

Number 3 And I like my 18-inch cross and favorite TV show as the theme to my public school classroom…

Number 2 Did we not tell you that we didn’t have our computers working in Introduction to Engineering Design… and it’s late October?

ENGINEERING…

The value of the 30-second speech Develop what matters most Need this for funding, students/enrollment, personal and upward mobility Take time to jot down ideas. Practice delivery to get comfortable. Refine as needed. WHAT, HOW AND WHY

Consider… Where is PLTW on your website or in your course catalog? How do you word the PLTW information? Who makes up your PLTW classroom and could they be brand ambassadors? When is your PLTW course(s) scheduled? Is your building ready for visitors to see your program in action? What do you say about STEM? How do parents/guardians/community know about PLTW?

Consider… Being the professional you appreciate in others. Working at the speed of the customer. Being personally accountable: You can only change you. Thinking about excellence and working to get there. Being introspective and seeking tools. Maintaining a “high road” approach.

Personal Accountability in Professionalism Ripple in a pond The practice of personal accountability: We discipline our thoughts. We ask better questions. We take action. - John G. Miller, The Question Behind The Question Change your corner of the building, your room, your office, your speak. Homework –Look at your landscape: space, course book, website and monitor “speak”
