Design Process Lesson 4 Scientist_____________________

Do Now Summarize what you observed. What does this make you think about. What questions do you have?

Essential Question How can the design process be used to communicate, design, and test ideas and processes?

Vocabulary Conceptual model: ideas that exist in a person’s mind or on paper Physical model: 3-D, can build it and touch it Prototype: first model of the product

Steps of the Design Process 1. Define the problemState the problem that needs to be researched. 2. Conduct research.Primary – is research you go out and conduct on your own; something that is not already widely researched Secondary – information that is already made available to you 3. Make a conceptual model.ideas that exist in a person’s mind or on paper 4. Make a physical model.3-D, can build it and touch it 5. TestTry it out to see if it does what it is supposed to. 6. Evaluate resultsDecide if the product is good enough. 7. RedesignMake changes to make the product better.

Hum Dinger How does it work. With a partner draw a conceptual model. – Complete the design process worksheet.

Switch and Closed Circuit Demonstration

Hum Dinger Part 2 With your partner, make your hum dinger based on your conceptual model. Does it work? Make changes/redesign if necessary.

Design Process Important Ideas Why are these ideas important? Which idea is relevant for today?Which idea (from above) interests you the most and why?

Design a Cell Phone Be prepared to share your results with a partner or the class.

Ticket Out the Door Answer the essential question How can the design process be used to communicate, design, and test ideas and processes?
