ARDA Massimo Lamanna / CERN

Massimo Lamanna 2 TOC ARDA Workshop Post-workshop activities Milestones (already shown in December)

Massimo Lamanna 3 ARDA workshops…  1 st ARDA workshop (January 2004 at CERN; open)  2 nd ARDA workshop (June at CERN; by invitation) “The first 30 days of EGEE middleware” Main focus on LHC experiments  EGEE NA4 (Applications) meeting mid July (Catania) open  3 rd ARDA workshop (October at CERN; open) “The LCG ARDA prototypes” Main ingredients: 50% ARDA and 50% gLite Virtual connection with OSG (Workshop at FNAL)  EGEE Conference meeting mid November (Den Haag)  4 th ARDA workshop (March at CERN; open)

Massimo Lamanna 4 4 th ARDA workshop  Open participation Good moment to get feedback from a wider audience  gLite release candidate 1 becoming available EGEE management review (Dec-Jan) Definition of the gLite components These components now available –Since about a month –For ARDA but for the pre-production service as well  As in the other workshops Experience and feedback from the ARDA team gLite team exposing status and plans LHC experiments EGEE NA4 (Applications) invited  New in this workshop Process towards a pre-production service sporting gLite components (LCG/EGEE operations)

Massimo Lamanna 5 Format of this workshop Monday the 7 th Tuesday the 8 th Morning CMS ALICE Afternoon Introduction gLite ARDA Towards a preproduction service LHCb ATLAS (gLite) End of the workshop For technical reasons, the workshop is not on VRVS but it is possible to watch it live via the CERN Webcast service (URL on the agenda page) The physical room is always 40-SS-C01

Massimo Lamanna 6 What we would like to achieve Discuss within our community the status and next steps of the activity on gLite and in the experiments (next 6-12 months)  The content of the gLite release 1 has been defined  Considerable effort to allow a significant deployment on the preproduction service going on (gLite development, integration and testing teams, ARDA, EGEE NA4 testing, LCG/EGEE deployment)  Plan first activity on the preproduction service (experiments and ARDA)

Massimo Lamanna 7 ARDA workshop Good attendance  But with a high turnaround… Often questions could not be fully answered because some of the relevant people left… The workshop is interesting because one can get a nice overview of the activities and because of discussions  Although JRA1-Italy/Cz cluster had a hands-on meeting at the same time, but they managed to send a representative person The clash was detected too late… They kindly managed to find a solution Very interesting contributions Interesting close-out discussion

Massimo Lamanna 8 Messages (1) gLite release 1 is being made available  Following the schedule decided in the EGEE management review and as illustrated to the LHCC referees  ARDA looks for a larger infrastructure (resources) It will be provided by the pre-production service, as soon the middleware can be certified and deployed  ARDA contributes to this preparation phase Considerable common testing effort going on Lead by SA1, with contributions from EGEE-JRA1, EGEE-NA4 and ARDA –Daily meeting –Weekly monitor Examples of the ARDA contributions: –Monitor the WMS (Long term stability) –Characterize the DMS (FiReMan catalog) –Info under:

Massimo Lamanna 9 Messages (2) Experiments’ attitude  Each experiment has its own solution ARDA should continue to the contribution to the “upper middleware” contribution (e.g. Ganga within the LHCb prototype)  Neutral attitude vis-à-vis gLite Interesting if the promised functionality (performance, stability, etc..) will be there Not on the critical path –Successful usage of LCG2 for analysis reported (e.g. CMS-CRAB) ARDA activity should use the pre-production service as soon as available

Massimo Lamanna 10 Discussion It looks that the functionality expected from gLite v. 1.0 is more or less OK  Basics are there  No frills either Batch analysis is the key  Absolutely necessary Interactive analysis very appealing anyway  Common effort across the experiments possible?  Common infrastructure layer needed Authentication, authorization, messaging systems, …

Massimo Lamanna 11 Post-workshop activities Prototype activity  gLite 1.0  Pre-production service needed Contribution to the gLite evaluation (performance measurements, etc…) Contribution to the common testing effort  SA1, JRA1, NA4 Discussion with the computing coordinators  Meetings with Les, Massimo, Pere; in progress

Massimo Lamanna 12 Agreed with F. Hemmer and E. Laure  Fix the “misalignment” problem For each experiment End of March  use the gLite middleware (beta) on the extended prototype (eventually the pre-production service) (beta) and provide feedback (technical issues and collect high-level comments and experience from the experiments) End of June  use the gLite middleware (version 1.0) on the extended prototype (eventually the pre-production service) and provide feedback (technical issues and collect high-level comments and experience from the experiments) End of September  use the gLite middleware (version 1.1) on the extended prototype (eventually the pre-production service) and provide feedback (technical issues and collect high-level comments and experience from the experiments) End of December  use the gLite middleware (version release candidate 2) on the extended prototype (eventually the pre-production service) and provide feedback (technical issues and collect high-level comments and experience from the experiments) ARDA will continue to organise workshops and facilitate meetings across the different components (gLite middleware, experiments, other software providers). The suggested format is a full workshop every 6 months and a regular (every fortnight) video conference. The workshop will be fixed according to the needs (the 6 month pace is a general guideline). As for 2004, no real milestone is associated to these tasks. Milestone 2005 Realistically, our horizon is here: rediscuss at the end of Q1 Already shown in December Detailed plan in April?
