Medical Students - 1 Medical class profile: – students per class –Currently 35-45% M/ 55-65% F –MD/PhD 6- 8 /year Preclinical (years 1-2) –Interdepartmental “block courses” in major subjects utilize lectures and small group discussions Both clinical and basic science faculty –Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) (all year) –Foundations of Research and Critical Thinking (FRCT) – longitudinal Research mentoring opportunities to aid your own research!)

Medical Students - 2 Clinical (years 3-4) –Core clerkships (4 – 8 weeks) –Electives –Subinternships –Engage students in your clinical settings –Participate in your Department’s teaching Consider signing up to interview applicants to help select future classes - Will count for promotion under service

Graduate Students Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) 8 Ph.D. Programs, 4 M.S. programs Approximately 345 students in program Interdepartmental programs so you need an appointment in a GPILS program in addition to your primary department appointment Faculty from UM Dental, Pharmacy and Nursing schools also participate in GPILS

Allied Health & Other Students Physical Therapy (DPT, PhD), ca. 180 students Master of Public Health (MPH), ca. 50 students Genetic Counseling (MS), ca. 12 students Medical and Research Technology (BS, MS), ca. 60 students Multiple dual degree options available

Clinical Residents and Fellows Clinical>other education (Hospital-based) 60 ACGME-accredited programs 750 residents and fellows –These are medical school graduates preparing for independent practice in their clinical specialty –Front line teachers of our medical students –Diverse backgrounds Cultural Educational

Research Postdoctoral Fellows Usually recruited and supervised by a single faculty member to conduct laboratory or non-laboratory research Ca. 340 current postdocs, Ph.D. or M.D. Supported on faculty research grants, individual fellowships, or training grants Office of Postdoctoral Scholars provide career development seminars and activities Teaching opportunities for faculty

Faculty (CME, Mentoring) Continuing Medical Education: our CME program consists of our departmental grand rounds programs, courses, seminars and online offerings. Faculty Development: Research, Clinical Advising and Mentoring, either 1 to 1 or in a advising/mentoring committee is a form of teaching that is valued for promotion

Teaching Opportunities In addition to teaching opportunities in the SOM, other opportunities exist on campus in multidisciplinary education programs (SON, SOD, SOP, SSW, SOL) and at UMCP & UMBC –also valued for promotion Faculty are encouraged to participate in teaching as soon as possible – Junior research faculty should try to delay major teaching responsibilities while establishing their research – Be proactive to find opportunities – Seek feedback regularly
