Physics 11 Advanced Mr. Jean May 2 nd, 2012

The plan: Video clip of the day Pendulum Motion (Short Video) Conservation of energy problems

Pendulum Motion: s/oscillatory-motion/pendulum-motion/ s/oscillatory-motion/pendulum-motion/

To do: The next 20 minutes –1) Complete Pendulum Lab If 1 is complete then Work on Science Fair If else work on Rube Goldberg project

Conservation of Energy with springs: Example #1: –A shopping cart with a student sitting in it has a mass of 80kg. It travels along a flat level low-friction surface (assume none!) and collides head on with a spring. The spring has a spring constant of 15500N/m. If the spring is compressed by 6 meters how fast was the cart travelling?

Conservation of Energy: m x x=0 E total = 1/2 mv 2 + 1/2 kx 2 = constant KE PE

Example #2: –A 200kg mass oscillates on a frictionless surface while attached to a spring with a spring constant of 500N/m. The amplitude of oscillation is 2 meters. A) What is the maximum velocity of the mass?

Energy Skate Park (Phet) Directions: Check out both of these online labs. Change the different variables and situation to see how the results change. There is not formal “To Pass In” piece to this; however these are good demonstrations to help develop the pictures of motion. – parkhttp://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-skate- park – labhttp://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/mass-spring- lab

To do: Last part of the class –1) Complete Pendulum Lab If 1 is complete then Work on Science Fair If else work on Rube Goldberg project If else else study for math midterm
