Year R’s Information Session 9 th March 2016

Reading: Changes in School Before half term: Children read with an adult once a week Recorded in their Reading Journal Changes: Children are in ability groups Guided reading 1:1 reading where needed and interventions “Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.” EYFS Framework 2014.

Guided Reading Children are in a small group of between 4 and 6 children with an adult EYFS Curriculum Early Learning Goals (ELG): C&L S&L: Children listen in a range of situations, listen to stories, anticipate key events, respond to what others say, respond appropriately. C&L Understanding: Children answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. C&L Speaking: Children express themselves effectively, showing an awareness of the listeners’ needs. PSED MR: Children take turns, take account of each other’s ideas, form positive relationships. PSED Self confidence and Awareness: Children are confident to talk in a familiar group, talk about their ideas. PSED MB: They work as part of a group, understand and follow the rules, they adjust their behaviour to different situations.

Parents’ Involvement Thank you for reading with your child! We recommend that parents read with their child at least 3 times per week Reading journals The school will keep their own records for Guided reading

Read Write Inc. Spring Term: 1 hour x3 sessions per week Follow the RWI program in ability groups which are reassessed half-termly Reading– not just decoding but also comprehension Writing- children apply their knowledge and reading skills Opportunities for literacy are provided through ‘Tourist Time’ and ‘Town Time’

Mud Kitchen: EYFS Curriculum Links EAD & CL – Role play, being imaginative and creative, working together Maths – weighing, measuring, using money at a mud café Science / Understanding the World - Exploring the properties/sensory, colours and textures of mud, experiencing and discussing nature PSED – Collaboration, communication Physical Development – carrying water, moving around, mixing mud, health and self-care Literacy – writing recipes, reading signs / recipes, apply RWI skills Art and Design – mud painting

Getting Messy! Children love getting messy! In school:

Building and Construction Provide pipes, hoses, guttering, planks, crates, ropes, pipe connectors, tyres…

Bikes and Trikes New bikes and trikes… Balancing bike (2 wheels) Runner bike (2 wheels and pedals) Circle cart (move with hands)

Other developments… Provide quiet areas that are ‘cosy’ for reading and talking Different ways of mark making: large blackboards, whiteboards, paintbrushes on the ground, Perspex, log whiteboards Small world trays Water tap outside for children to access

Additional Information: Timetable Changes We have adapted our timetable to have more of a child-initiated and adult-focused balance Playtime has changed, for example: Before half term: 10.00am – snack and story 10.15am – everyone played on the main playground 10.30am – maths Now: 10.00am – snack and story 10.15am – children can choose indoors or outdoors (free-flow) 11.15am – maths
