 Father was a Cavalry officer and owned a newspaper  He was an only child  Raised during the Civil War  Enjoyed boating, riding, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors  Enjoyed sketching soldiers in uniform

 Attended Military School at age 15  Went to Yale Art School for 3 semesters  Traveled West many times starting at age 19  Drew pen & ink drawings for magazines

 The West, cowboys, and horses

 Sketched soldiers, Indians, cowboys and horses  Painted and illustrated  Wrote short stories and worked for magazines  Sculpted clay models / cast them in bronze
