My Child has Failed One or More Classes…Now What?!?! Mrs. Soberanis, 9 th Grade Counselor Ms. Mounger, 10 th Grade Counselor Winter 2016 Katella High School

What is the Purpose of Today’s Meeting? First semester has ended and your student will be earning one or more “F’s” on his/her report card We want to educate you on what this means for your student and how you can help him/her get back on track Katella High School

What Does an “F” Mean? Failing a class means that you child is “credit deficient”, meaning he/she is missing credits In order to graduate with a high school diploma, all students must earn 220 credits o Each class is worth 5 credits, per semester, for a total of 10 credits per year, per class o There is no substitution for failing the following classes. THEY MUST BE REPEATED:  English (4 years required) 40 credits  Math (3 years required) 30 credits  History (3 years required) 30 credits  Science (2 years required) 20 credits  PE (2 years required) 20 credits  Health (1 semester) 5 credits Katella High School

Options Options for repeating classes include: o APEX (after-school online classes) o PCHS (online summer school classes) o ACCESS (summer school at an ACCESS site) o Anaheim Achieves After-School classes (done at Katella, after school) Katella High School These options are never guaranteed. First priority goes to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores, then freshmen.

Now What???? Second semester is a fresh start o What does this mean? All grades are new Nothing carries over from 1 st semester Monitor student progress o Check Aeries on a regular basis Grades and Attendance go together!!! o Check your student’s planner daily (if there is nothing written in it, ask why) o Communicate with teachers via or phone Parent Center is available to assist with interpretation Get involved! o Join PTSA o Attend Coffee with the Principal o Participate in Parent Center activities/classes o Look on katellahs.org website for dates and times If you notice any changes in your student and need some assistance, please let us know Katella High School
