The ‘New’ NPA Construction SCQF 5 Briefing paper sent to Centres February 2016 announcing the ‘New NPA Construction SCQF 5 Two important factors.  Industry recognised Pre-Apprenticeship qualification  Extensive consultation with the construction industry and practitioners 2014

NPA Review Consultation Report. April 2014 Remit, to determine if the qualification was still : - Fit for purpose - Relevant to the needs of industry - Relevant to the needs of candidates Determine if units were : - Fit for purpose - Needing amendments, removed or replaced.

NPA Review Report : Feedback from Industry. The revised NPA in Construction should :  Include a wider range of mandatory occupational units thus increasing employment prospects.  Require a minimum of three mandatory occupational units to be taken to improve employment prospects.  Allow opportunity for prospective apprentices to achieve some basic generic skills (Health & Safety, Employability and Behavioural Skills, Waste Awareness, ICT, (Mandatory Units)

NPA Review Report : Feedback from Industry. The revised NPA in Construction should :  Include a Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification to facilitate CSCS/ SCORE Card access.

NPA Review Report Recommendations Amend the overall qualification framework requirements by  Adding occupational mandatory units for Stonemasonry, Floorcovering and Construction Operations and removing Plumbing and Electrical.  Requiring a minimum of three occupational mandatory crafts units  Retaining all mandatory generic units in the framework but increasing the content and credit level to include behavioural skills, waste awareness, sustainability and ICT. -

NPA Review Report Recommendations Amend the overall qualification framework requirements by :  Replacing the mandatory existing ‘Construction Safety Practice’ unit and replacing it with ‘Health & Safety in a Construction Environment’ to facilitate CSCS/ SCORE Card access  Reviewing the currency of existing specialist units and update them where necessary  Amend the optional Career Pathways (specialisation) to include Stonemasonry, Floorcovering and Construction Operations and removing Plumbing’ and ‘Electrical’.

NPA Review Recommendations  Form a Qualification Design Team (QDT) to review the findings and recommendations outlined in this report, with representation from. - SPADAC Education Committee. - Scottish Building Apprenticeship and Training Council (SBATC) Board. - Historic Environment Scotland. - The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)

The ‘New’ NPA Construction SCQF 5 Workshop No 1 Structure (20 minutes)

The ‘New’ NPA Construction SCQF 5 Validated February Main focus of today’s event is to update the centres on changes to the following Mandatory Units  Construction Occupation Practices: An Introduction  Efficient Construction Practices: An Introduction  Employment and Behavioural Skills

The ‘New’ NPA Construction SCQF 5 Workshop No 2 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment (45 minutes)

The ‘New’ NPA Construction TAPs  Main design feature was to base the New NPA TAPs on the same style as the TAPs currently used for PDA’s which are now well established.  Two main parts a) Knowledge and Understanding Multi-Choice Question Paper. Paper A and B (supplied) b) Practical Assessment Activities and Observation Checklists

The ‘New’ NPA Construction TAPs  The vast majority of the NPA TAPs have 4 Sections in the Multi-Choice Papers Cutting Scores for each section are clearly identified Section A:-Knowledge & Understanding Section B:-Numeracy Section C:-Health and Safety Section D:-Sustainability

The ‘New’ NPA Construction TAPs  The Observation Checklists have a New Section added.  This new section can also be used as assessment evidence for some of the PCs in the Employment & Behavioural Skills Unit which is one of the Units in Mandatory Section of the framework.

The ‘New’ Additional Section Added to the Practical Checklists Employment and Behavioural Skills Attendance Demonstrate good attendance during this activity Timekeeping Demonstrate good timekeeping during this activity Positive attitude Demonstration of positive attitude to learning. Following instruction Show a willingness to follow instructions from person in charge. Response to performance feedback Responds positively to advice and feedback given on performance.
