Aim: What kinds of weapons were used in WWI? How did soldiers change over time? Do Now: What do you think the quote below means? “New weapons are changing the way war is fought. This is the first war where good fighting machines are more important than good fighting men.”

Automatic Machine Gun  Description  First used in the 1860s in the U.S.  Fires a belt of bullets at rapid fire for a long time  Uses in WWI  Can kill soldiers by the hundreds in a few minutes  Connections to Today  Shoots many bullets  Designs have not changed because they are still useful

Tank  Description  First used in 1916  Truck covered in metal that uses its tracking  Runs over trenches  Uses in WWI  Overcomes trenches, mines, and barbed wire to clear paths.  Cannot be stopped by machine guns  Connections to Today  Faster and easier to control  Modern tanks are mobile and use a lot of ammunition and fuel.

Submarine  Description  First used in 1914 (mostly by Germany)  A ship (U-Boat) that moves underwater  Uses in WWI  Shoots torpedoes (underwater bombs)  Sinks enemy ships without being seen  Connections to Today  They are now powered by diesel and nuclear energy  Shoots torpedoes, nuclear weapons, and missiles  Provides communication and protection

Airplane  Description  First used in 1914  Carries a pilot and machine guns  Shoots down enemy aircraft and enemies on the ground  Uses in WWI  Used to drop bombs and track enemies  Connections to Today  Airpower is now referred to as aerospace power  The air force now uses smart weapons and guided missiles  Helicopters now assist ground troops

Poison Gas/Mask  Description  First used in 1915  Poison in the air  Very dangerous  Uses in WWI  Masks are now standard to use  Connections to Today  Terrorists are likely to use gas  Chemical warfare is outlawed
