Cell Biology Unit Test Tuesday November 5 th, 2012 List the 6 characteristics that all living things share. Living things are made of cells. Living things obtain and use energy. Living things grow and develop. Living things reproduce. Living things respond to their environment. Living things adapt to their environment. Apply these 6 characteristics to examples of a living and non‐living thing. List the 3 parts of the cell theory. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of life in all living things. All cells are produced by the division of preexisting cells. Identify the Cell Scientist’s discovery Hooke -discovers cells Leuwenhoek -discovers single cells. Pasteur -disproves spontaneous generation Schleiden -discovers plants are made of cells Schwann -discovers animal tissue made of cells. Virchow -discovers cells come from pre‐existing cell Define Eukaryotic cells and Prokaryotic cells. Identify the difference between Eukaryotic cells and Prokaryotic cells. Identify examples of Prokaryotic cells a. Eubacteria – Also called Bacteria; smallest organism. b. Archeabacteria – Extremophiles Methane Making Heat loving ii. Salt Loving Identify examples of Eukaryotic cells -Many are multi‐cellular such as Plants and animals (among others) but can also be a single‐cell organism. Draw a picture of an animal cell and label all of its parts. Draw a picture of a plant cell and label all of its parts. Define and explain the function (job) of: Nucleus Chromosomes Nucleolus Cytoplasm Cell wall Chloroplast Cell membrane Vacuole Ribosome Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Body Lysosome Mitochondria

Explain 3 differences and at least 2 similarities between a plant cell and an animal cell. Describe how a cell and a factory are similar and different (2 reasons each). Define Active and Passive Transport How are they similar and different? Why would a cell need both types of transport? Why is transportation of materials important to the cell? Identify that endocytosis and exocytosis are types of active transport Define Osmosis and Diffusion. Explain how cells move materials into and out of a cell membrane. Semi-permeable membranes vs. Impermeable membranes Explain how diffusion and osmosis are similar. Describe how molecules move (High to Low) Compare molecule size to size of the membrane’s hole or pores Why is drinking salt water or pure water bad for the cells? Be able to support with data from the Red onion osmosis lab. What is the overall goal of diffusion or osmosis? Be able to identify, describe, and evaluate different examples of diffusion and osmosis (look at diffusion and osmosis HWs or the website) Describe what occurred in our Egg-cellent lab with the eggs and the different liquids. List the 6 stages of the cell cycle What are chromosomes and why are they important? What is the shape of DNA? Identify each stage of the cell cycle in a picture Order the stages from beginning to end (interphase to cytokinesis). Define what’s happening to the chromosomes in each stage of mitosis.
