Unit 1 Present Progressive review We use the present progressive (continuous) to talk about things that are happening now. She is drinking coffee. They are wearing sweaters. Present progressive is made of two parts: S + be verb + verb(ing) She is drinking coffee. They are wearing sweaters. I am studying English. How do we make questions? Unit 2Simple Past We use the simple past to talk about actions, states or situations that are finished. They are commonly used with past time expressions. I ate a big dinner yesterday. To make verbs past tense- most verbs end in –ed, but some irregular verbs change. (See your best friend).

With past progressives, we focus on how long the past action lasted, not when it was finished. you/ we/ they were + verb(ing) She/ he/ it/Iwas + verb (ing) I was teaching when Ace walked in. Unit 3 Past progressive and simple past. While I was running, my mom was cooking dinner. While comes before the past progressive. This means that two actions were happening at the same time.

Unit 4 Used to and would Used to and would are used to talk about repeated actions or habits in the past. When I was young, my sister and I used to steal sugar from the store. Did you use to study when you were in school? I didn’t use to like garlic, but now I do. Would is used with action verbs. Begin stories with used to, then you can use would + verbs.

Note 2 Use the present perfect to talk about things that happened at an indefinite time in the past. They have decided to live apart. Past ?nowfuture __________ X __________________________________________> Have decided

Note 2 Use the simple past to talk about things that happened at a specific time in the past. The exact time is known and sometimes stated. They got married in 2007 Past2007nowfuture ___________ X _______________________________________> get married

Note 2 She has found a job in Mexico. specific time is not known or not important. Use the present perfect to say what happened. Use the simple past to say what happened and when it happened. He lost his job in 2008.

Note 2 They have lived apart since They lived apart in Be careful! The present perfect can be used with since with a specific point in time. The present perfect with since describes an action that started in the past and continues into the present. I lived in Seoul in I have live in Seoul since NOT I’ve lived in Seoul in NOT I lived in Seoul since 2007.

Note 3 Use the present perfect to talk about things that have happened in a time period that is not finished, such as today, this morning, this month, this year. He’s called three times today. Is today finished? No! Use the simple past to talk about things that happened in a time period that is finished, such as yesterday, last month, last year. He called three times yesterday. Is yesterday finished? Yes!

Note 3 Today I’ve received 20 s. (present perfect +unfinished time period). Yesterday I received 10 s. (simple past + finished time period) Remember: Use the present perfect for periods of time that are not finished, for example today. Use the simple past for periods of time that are finished, for example yesterday.

Note 3 Be careful!!! Some time expressions, such as this morning, this month, or this year can refer to an unfinished or finished time period. Use the present perfect if the time period is unfinished. Use the simple past if the time period is finished. It’s 10:00 a.m. She’s had three cups of coffee this morning. (The morning isn’t finished). It’s 1:00 p.m. She had three cups of coffee this morning. (The morning is finished).

Role playing- the present perfect Sunmi and Shinjeng now have two children! They are interviewing a babysitter to watch their children. I will put you in groups of three students. Two of you will be Sunmi and Shinjeng. The third student will be a babysitter. Sunmi and Shinjeng will create three sentences each (total 6) to ask the possible babysitter. The “babysitter” will create three sentences that he/ she will ask Sunmi and Shinjeng. Sunmi and Shinjeng: Have you ever fallen asleep in the job? Babysitter: No, never! Babysitter: Have you ever taken a babysitter on vacation with you? S +S: Yes! Two years ago, we took the babysitter to Hawaii with us.
