Assessment in Key Stage 1 Parent workshop. Tuesday 1 st March 2016

Aims To inform parents of assessment procedures at the end of Key Stage One, including the content of SATs, how they will be delivered and what they include. To inform parents of ways they can support children through the SATs process.

Teacher assessment On-going, daily assessment in: English, e.g. daily reading, RWI/English lessons, reading/writing/speaking in theme lessons, diary writing. Maths - daily maths lessons, Big Maths including Beat that, maths in theme lessons. Science – enquiry and knowledge from science and theme lessons. SATs add further evidence Schools participate in moderation to ensure accuracy (school, MAT, DCC)

SATs add to the wide range of evidence a teacher uses to make final judgements. They are not the only evidence.

What are SATs? Statutory Assessment Tests  English – reading  English – Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling  Mathematics

English – reading  Emphasis on comprehension, e.g. Inference, prediction  Selection of unrelated tasks with increasing difficulty  A mixture of 2 text types  2 papers for all

Children working at greater depth in reading can;  Predict  Infer  Link

English – Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling  New this year!  No contextualised questions  Spelling test by asking pupils to complete sentence with missing word

English – Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling  Content includes; Past/present tense ? !., Contractions Sentence type Word type

 Arithematic test and reasoning test  Apparatus for some questions Mathematics

Children working at greater depth in Maths can;  Reason about addition  Use multiplication facts to make deductions  Solve word problems with more than one step.

When?  Test window open through May.  Usually done mid-May in case of absence.

Who? Will take test if… working at standard of tests and can access tests, including those where modification may be required. Won’t take test if… cannot access tests due to SEND needs even with modification working below standard of tests performance on the National Curriculum cannot be established.

How? Small groups Questions read if asked ‘Special quiz’ Normal classroom environment – breaks, stop if too much! Teacher’s assessment still key – SATs small part of bigger picture, e.g written, practical, oral classwork

Why? Allows schools, parents, Government to track progress. Children’s raw score converted to scaled score to track through school life. First time revised National Curriculum assessed.
