FOOD Traditional food in selected English speaking countries and in the Czech Republic

Traditional food in the UK BREAKFAST In the UK breakfast usually consists of a bowl of cereals with milk or porridge. Porridge is oats boiled in milk, and it is served warm. Only at the weekend people have time for a full English breakfast, which is a hot dish of fried bacon, sausage, egg, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. (Picture 1) As a drink they usually have a cup of tea or coffee and a glass of orange juice. LUNCH In the UK lunch is generally smaller than dinner. At school or at work it usually is a packed lunch - which often consists of a sandwich (Picture 2) with ham or a similar cold cut of meat, or cheese, a bag of crisps, a drink, often fruit squash and a bar of chocolate or a yoghurt. Picture 1 Picture 2

DINNER Dinner is the biggest meal of the day, served either at noon or in the evening. A traditional Sunday dinner, served at noon, is Sunday roast. (Picture 3) Roast meat (pork, beef or lamb) is usually served with boiled or roast potatoes, peas, Brussels sprouts, carrots, Yorkshire pudding and, of course, gravy (a sauce made from juices of meat while cooked). Other traditional meals, eaten either at lunchtime or at supper, are steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash and fish and chips. (Picture 4) Nowadays the most popular dish in Britain is Chicken Tikka Masala, which consists of chicken in a spicy, creamy sauce, and is usually served with rice. The words supper or tea throughout England and Scotland refer to a light evening meal. Picture 3 Picture 4

Traditional food in the USA BREAKFAST Breakfast in the USA often consists of either a cereal-based dish or an egg-based dish. There are many ways in which eggs are prepared, from scrambled to eggs benedict. (Picture 5) Cereal-based dishes include waffles, pancakes, French toast, and cereals with milk. (Picture 6) Coffee and orange juice are the most common breakfast beverages amongst adults. LUNCH North Americans generally eat a quick lunch which often includes some type of sandwich. Children often bring packed lunches to school, which might consist of a sandwich such as ham and cheese, tuna, chicken, or peanut butter and jelly, as well as some fruit, chips, dessert and a drink such as juice, milk, or water. Picture 5 Picture 6

Adults often leave work to go out for a quick lunch, which might include some type of hot or cold sandwich such as a hamburger or "sub" sandwich. DINNER The biggest meal of the day is usually eaten in the evening. It consists of some kind of meat, a vegetable and bread. (Picture 7) Often Americans are too tired to cook and so order a pizza or warm up ready meals (also called TV dinners) in the microwave oven. The traditional hamburger is very different from what you find at McDonald’s. The meat on a real hamburger must be at least 2.5 cm thick, and be served on a thick, soft homemade bun. From there you can have what you want on it, such as cheese, onions and ketchup. (Picture 8) Picture 7 Picture 8

Traditional food in Australia and New Zealand BREAKFAST The majority of Australians and New Zealanders eat cold prepared cereals with milk or yoghurt and/or toast with preserves such as marmalade or Vegemite for breakfast. (Picture 9) Two of the most common cereals are cornflakes and a type of biscuit made from wheat called Weetabix. (Picture 10) LUNCH The most popular lunch meals are hot food. These may include burgers, sandwiches and other generic café foods. DINNER Australian typical dinners are influenced by the British traditions, that´s why roast dinners, meat pies and fish and chips are very popular. Picture 9 Picture 10

Because Australia and New Zealand are surrounded by oceans, it is natural that seafood plays an important role in their cuisine, too. The Pavlova (Picture 11) is a very rich meringue dessert with a crisp crust and soft, light inside. It is both popular in Australia and New Zealand and they both claim to have made it first. Australians love barbeques, or barbies, how they call them. People grill sausages, steak and also seafood (Picture 12), especially at Christmas or on Australia day (26 January). Picture 11 Picture 12

Traditional food in Canada Canadians have an American-like diet, where dinner is the most important meal of the day. There is some typical original Canadian food: poutine, the French Canadian pea soup and maple syrup. Poutine, a dish from Quebec, is now popular all over the country. It consists of French fries covered with cheese and hot gravy. (Picture 13) The French Canadian pea soup is a thick yellow pea soup with beats of pork in it. Maple syrup, from the sap of maple trees, is usually eaten with pancakes (Picture 14) or ice cream. Picture 13 Picture 14

Traditional food in the Czech Republic BREAKFAST In the Czech Republic breakfast usually consists of bread, some salami and cheese, or yoghurt with some cereals, together with a cup of tea. LUNCH The biggest meal is lunch. Lunch traditionally begins with a hot soup, usually a broth with pieces of meat and vegetables. Popular are also garlic or onion soups. The most deliciuos dishes are goulash, svíčková (tenderloin in a creamy sauce) (Picture 15) and Schnitzel with potato salad. (Picture 16) Picture 15 Picture 16

Gúláš, the Czech version of the Hungarian dish, features equal portions of beef and onions cooked with spices and served with dumplings. (Picture 17) DINNER A typical supper is often a cold plate of ham, cheese and bread. Still, the most important component of a Czech meal is probably a drink: beer! (Picture 18) Czechs hold the world´s record of beer consumption! Picture 17 Picture 18
