Boxing day

Boxing Day in the United Kingdom is the day after Christmas Day and falls on December 26. Traditionally, it was a day when employers distributed money, food, cloth (material) or other valuable goods to their employees.

Origins The name derives from the traditional, dating from the Middle Ages custom donated to poor service or gifts wrapped in boxes, according to the Oxford dictionary 'To give a Christmas-box, hence boxing-day ", there are many folk traditions to explain the creation of the custom, most of them associated with distributing gifts, money or food packed in boxes. According to some applications in this day rich handed out gifts or money, another message says that the name comes from the lockbox, piggy banks for donations located in the church - the money collected that day were given out to the poor parishioners. Another etymology of the word is associated with the medieval custom when that day were caught wren, the "king of all birds", inserted it into the box and carried after all the houses in the village, which was to bring a happy year and a good harvest

For many people Boxing Day is a time to recover from the excesses of Christmas day and an opportunity to spent time with family, friends and neighbors. Some people choose to go for a walk in the countryside, while other people to the post-Christmas sales in large stores that often begin on Boxing Day. Some people even spend part of the night and early morning queuing to get into the stores when the best bargains are still available.
