Paul Cockaday Strategic Carbon Manager Michael Dawson Energy and Water Efficiency Manager Site Managers/Caretakers Workshop Maximising Efficiency

Introduction Presentation Aims: 1.To identify ways of managing your school site for maximum energy efficiency and minimum cost 2.To explore energy use data Presentation Content: Energy efficiency opportunities – inspection & audit Energy efficiency measures Energy use data Energy benchmarking & comparison

Energy Saving Opportunities? Energy Saving Opportunities Building & Plant / Equipment (Investment) Management & Housekeeping (Behaviour) Types of Energy Wastage:

Identifying Opportunities? Conduct an Energy Walk Around Look for obvious energy waste To agree good housekeeping measures room by room To produce a list of items needing attention To establish priorities for investment (CERF, ESCO etc..) When?: At lunchtime At night or weekends When the cleaners are on duty Beginning of holidays Beginning and end of the heating season When the clocks change See Carbon Trust Guide CTV037 Whole School Approach for more information

Identifying Opportunities? Energy Busters/ Futures Audit (NPS)

Identifying Opportunities? Example Zero Cost Solutions: Encourage staff and pupils to close external doors and windows Encourage staff and pupils to turn off lighting when rooms become empty Re-commission optimiser boiler controls and thermostats Boiler pre-heat times to no more than 3 hours All temperature set points should be 19 o C heating, 25 o C cooling. Each 1 o C reduction is ~8% saving Optimum start set points should be indicative of the area where the internal sensor is located (ie if sensor located in the hall the set point should be below 19 o C as most halls were designed to be heated to 16 o C) Ensure heat sources have not been blocked by fixtures Turn off computers when not in use Reduce usage of supplementary electric heaters Repair leaks on distribution mains

Identifying Opportunities? Example Low Cost Solutions: Install, replace or repair thermostats Install domestic optimum start controllers to small scale heating plant Insulate domestic hot water cylinders Fit reflective foil behind radiators Replace tungsten lighting with compact fluorescent lamps Replace halogen lighting with good quality LED lamps Convert gasoil fired plant to kerosene Install self-closing devices to external doors Draught strip external doors and windows Install 7 day time controls to electric hot water heaters

Identifying Opportunities? Example Medium Cost Solutions: Install modern boiler controller with optimum start/stop and compensation where applicable on larger sites with multiple blocks install a BMS (high cost) Replace on peak electric convector heaters with off-peak storage Replace existing bi-metal room thermostats with more accurate electronic room thermostats Insulate heating pipe work Install thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) Insulate loft spaces to current standards Install cavity wall insulation Automatic lighting controls

Identifying Opportunities? Example High Cost Solutions: Install new condensing boilers Change heating fuel type from oil to gas Install double glazing (usually payback in excess of 50 years) Replace excessive areas of glazing with insulated panels. Install swimming pool cover Insulate swimming pool roofs and walls Replace old fluorescent fittings with modern high frequency fittings. Install draught lobbies to entrances Decentralisation of boiler plant (large site only) Install renewable devices (Photovoltaic array, Solar thermal, Wind turbine etc) Improve zoning of the heating system Replace electric storage heaters

Identifying Opportunities? Optimum Start Boiler Controls – The Theory

Energy Data Shows the trend over 5 years Compares consumption and cost Totals at the bottom show absolute values

Energy Data Shows the trend over 2 years Compares consumption and cost Monthly breakdown may be influenced by estimated readings

Energy Data Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Gas and electricity only (currently supplier over 22,000kWh electricity and 73,000kWh gas) Installed and run by the suppliers (may be additional charges) Used for billing 3 rd party sub metering options available

Energy Data Benefits Accurate billing - no more estimated reads Consumption recorded half hourly so daily trends can be analysed Half hourly information and other reports available online in eSight

Energy Data Yearly consumption and cost comparison

Energy Data Two year comparison

Energy Data - Benchmarking CIBSE TM46 / M2 Comparison

Benchmarking

Assist in checking bills Highlight plant/control failures causing waste Identify water leaks Provide data for performance assessment Help interpret usage & energy waste Raise awareness of energy Take care on significant digits & decimal places Check units & conversions Read at consistent intervals Analyse immediately and check anomalies Beware of meter roll-over Press the button (rate 1 kWh, rate 2 kWh) Energy Data – Meter reading

Useful Information

1.What does my data mean? 2.What do I know about my school now I have seen the data? 3.What can I do in my school to make a big impact on reducing carbon? 4.How can I work with teachers, support staff and pupils to reduce carbon? Forum Be succinct when making a point Listen carefully Stay focussed on discussion questions
