Fire Safety Emergency Drills Body Mechanics

 The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces safety standards in the workplace to protect employees from injury and illness.

Always remain calm during any emergency. (fire, tornado, earthquake, accident)

A Fire needs three things in order to start:  Oxygen  Fuel  Heat

 Go to the hallway, turn right, and exit through the front doors.

 One is located by the rear door  And another one is located right outside the door

 Near all Exits…………Why?  Students should exit this room in a single file line and in an orderly manner.

 All students need to stay together in a group.  Never go visit with others.  Roll will be taken to make sure that all students are present.

 Pull the pin.  Aim at the base of the fire.  Squeeze the handle.  Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

 Type A – used on common combustibles, such as wood and paper (anything that becomes an ash).  Type B – used on flammable liquid fires, including grease, gasoline, and oil.  Type C – used on electrical fires such as a computer fire.  Type D – used on flammable metals.  Type ABC – can be used on any A, B, or C fire. (most common)

 Never use elevators in a fire evacuation.  Feel doors before opening them. If the door is hot, do not open it.  If you see smoke or fire on your escape route, try a secondary route.  If fire is blocking all of your exits, stay in a room with the door closed. Flag for help at a window.

 Students in this classroom would go to the back hallway near Graphics Design.  Students will need to duck and cover.

 Means that conditions are favorable for a tornado.

 A tornado has been spotted in the area.  All students will evacuate to their assigned areas.

 All students will either get under the back tables or under their desk in the room.  Stay away from objects which could fall on you.

 All students would exit the building just like a fire drill, but then they would be instructed to go to a safe location further away from building.

 When the school spots an intruder or other school threat occurs, a lock down notification will be given.  The classroom door will be locked.  All classroom lights will be turned off.  And students will hide and be very quiet. Students must stay very quiet….Do Not want the intruder to know that anyone is in the classroom.

 Ergonomics is the study of promoting the safety and comfort of a person by adapting the environment as needed.  Ergonomics is concerned with how the design of a facility affects a person’s well-being. Also, it could be as simple as how well a desk chair promotes good posture.

 Body mechanics is moving and positioning the body in ways that prevent injury to oneself and to others.  Body mechanics uses proper body alignment, balance, and movement to increase muscle productivity.

 Muscles are most productive when they are used correctly.  The acts of lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing become easier with proper body mechanics.  Using body mechanics saves energy and increases a worker’s efficiency.  Muscles that are used correctly are less likely to become injured.

 Body mechanics is moving and positioning the body in ways that prevent injury to oneself and to others.  Not only is it important for health care workers to use correct body mechanics in their own motions, but they must also help patients use these principles.

1. Muscles work better. 2. Makes lifting, pulling, and pushing easier. 3. Prevents fatigue and strain. 4. Prevents injury to self and others.

1. Maintain a broad base of support. a. keep feet 8-10 inches apart b. put one foot slightly forward c. toes should be pointing in the direction of movement d. balance weight on both feet 2. Bend from the hips and knees. a. keep back straight b. do not bend at the waist

3. Use your strongest muscles. a. which includes shoulders, upper arms, hips, and thighs b. back muscles are very weak muscles 4. Use the weight of your body to push or pull. a. avoid lifting whenever possible 5. Carry heavy objects close to your body. a. stand very close to the object being moved

6. Avoid twisting your body. a. can cause injury 7. Avoid bending for long periods of time. a. puts stress on muscles 8. Assess the load. a. always get help if needed

 Good Handwashing helps prevent the spread of illness/infections.  Medical Equipment should be handled with care.  Classroom Injuries should be reported immediately to teacher.
