Kitchen Safety Keep all doors and drawers closed at all times Absolutely no playing around in kitchen Wash knives with the blade away from you Don’t soak knives When cutting keep fingers curled away from the blade. Use guidelines Hot oil and water do not mix. Keep water away from oil Never move or transfer hot oil Remove anything from stove with hot pads Never use a towel or wet towel to remove something from the oven

Kitchen Safety Basics Stay Calm Dress for Success No horseplay Keep doors and drawer closed Use a step stool or ladder to get things off high shelves

Fire Hazards Never place foil/Metal in microwave Keep all flammable material away from flames

Should you fight a fire? Ask yourself are you in danger? Grease fires can only be put out by lid, baking soda or fire extinguisher Never try to put out an oil fire with water

Preventing Fires and Burn Never move or transfer hot oil Let everyone know you are coming through with hot items Watch out for each other Always assume something is hot. Think before you act When boiling with lid, lift lid away from you

Preventing Slips and Fall Pick up all spills immediately Oil is the worst type of spill Control clutter

Lifting and carrying safely Never pick up heavy items with your back. Use knees Wear sturdy shoes Store heavy items on bottom shelf Use cart when transporting heavy items

Preventing cuts Cut with Fingers curled away from blade Never try to catch a falling knife Never soak a knife Wash and dry sharp objects with blade away from you When glass break sweep up large pieces and pick up small pieces with a damp paper towel Focus on what you are doing When handing a knife to someone, lay it down on the counter

Electrical Safety Never use electrical appliances near water Check damage to cords Never overload a outlet To disconnect appliance grap at the plug not the cord

Hazardous Chemicals Never store chemicals near food Never mix chemicals Spray chemicals away from food and other group members

In Case of an Accident Stay Calm Inform teacher immediately Burns run under cold water

First Aid If you cut yourself, compress the cut with a paper towel You have the responsibility to keep yourself safe Chemicals in eyes run under cold water

Oven Safety Arrange racks before turning on the oven Always use dry pot holders when removing things from oven Never use a dish towel remove things from the oven Stand to the side when getting items out of oven

Cooktop Safety Handles towards center and back Keep all flammable material away from flame Let oil cool before disposing Water and hot oil do not mix-causes oil to splatter

Additional Concepts FIFO-First in First Out-Rotation Procedures Old stuff used first. New stuff placed in back 2 or more people who get sick from same food is an outbreak.
