to Chinangwa Village, in Malawi!

Malawi is a small country in east Africa. We are visiting Chinangwa village in the south of Malawi.

Work starts early in the village, most people begin to work before 7.30 a.m.

Many of the people who live in Chinangwa Village are sugar cane farmers. Some of them belong to “Kasinthula Cane Growers”, an organisation Traidcraft buys sugar from.

Some of the sugar the farmers grow is fair trade. Do you know what fair trade means?

There are some People in Mikanzo Church, near to the village.

Alfred runs the village shop which he started because he made more money through selling fair trade sugar. “I opened my grocery shop next to my house in It was my ambition for almost two years to open the shop.”

There is a borehole and a water pump in the village.

Before the water pump was built, people from the village had to go to a river to fetch water. There are lots of crocodiles in the river so it was very dangerous.

Fair trade means that the village now has electricity.

This is Joyce, a sugar farmer. “The fair trade programme is doing good things here. The village where I live has one borehole and electricity. It is very exciting!”
