Laboratory Health and Safety

P5 Demonstrate safe working practices in a scientific workplace. M5 Explain the need for current regulations and legislation in safe working practices. D4 Evaluate the regulation of safe working practices in a scientific workplace.

Regulations and legislation: Task 5a (Merit 5) Complete attached worksheet to provide examples then explain the need for current articles of regulations and legislation (5 listed below) in safe working practices (M5). 1.COSHH regulations; 2.HSE inspectors; 3. UKAS assessments; 4. international standards relating to good laboratory practice and quality of service, e.g. quality standards (BS EN ISO/IEC 17025, GLP/GMP/GCP, BS EN ISO 9001); 5. Compliance regulations, e.g. FDA/MHRA/EMEA.

Task 5b Evaluate the regulation of safe working practices in a scientific workplace (D5). Judge the value of having laws/rules (listed in task 5a) relating to safely in the workplace and how well scientists implement those rules.

Sources of information Sources of information: CLEAPSS hazards, manufacturer’s data sheets, MSDS Safe working practices: use of fume cupboards; storage of chemicals and test samples; waste disposal; incident and accident procedures; risk assessments; COSHH register; good housekeeping, e.g. safe handling of pathogens; protective equipment, e.g. laboratory coat, protective gloves, goggles, visor, protective shoes, protective glasses.

Compliance means carrying out the activities of health and safety. Regulation refers to rules or laws that make it illegal not to complete the activity for health and/or safety.

International Standards Several quality system standards were developed in various countries in the 1960s and 1970s. The MIL-Q-9858A was established in the United States in 1963, and the BS 5750 was established in 1979 in the United Kingdom. These are probably the two most important standards from this era. The ISO 9000 series of quality standards was established in 1987 for implementing and maintaining a quality system. This standard is internationally accepted and can be used as a criterion for third-party quality assessment.
