DHS & CBP Use of APAN 10 DHS – over 1000 results between files, forum, people, blogs, wikis (combined with “Department of homeland security) CBP – over 1000 results, 1 group (combined with “Customs border patrol”) USCG – 5 Zimbra Groups, 3 SharePoint sites, over 2000 results Homeland – 2 groups, over 1000 results NOTE: Not all communities/site use DHS/CBP or USCG names.

Nepal Earthquake Response Communities support the Nepal HADR Nepal HADR (public) Nepal Earthquake Imagery (private) III MEF: Nepal HADR (private to PACOM) Metrics indicate the public page enable information sharing between USG, other governments and NGOs Top 10 countries: US, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Nepal, UK, Thailand, India, Philippines, Saudi Arabia APAN KM: created communities, facilitated information sharing, developed metrics

Operation United Assistance 12  APAN KMs provided 101 st Airborne KM’s with numerous resources (past KM Plans, LL, templates, mapping ideas, etc.) to include: -5 Custom Training Videos -3 Custom Training Documents -Numerous live training seminars -5 custom training videos  Customized community based on specific requirements & requests from: -DOD CIO -AFRICOM HQ JOC -101st Airborne (COP & KM) -82nd Civil Affairs Battalion  Conducted daily teleconferences -Training for managing map feeds & layers -Developed custom solution for 101st Airborne with UN OCHA map icons

RIMPAC - Operation Restore Griffon 13  HA/DR Exercise & RIMPAC 14 Support  APAN was included in exercise planning (US & Japanese) from the IPC  APAN developed exercise KM plan for CJTF  Conducted APAN training with key exercise participants seven days before Startex  Provided on-site support to exercise coord cell, CJTF and CMOC: –CJTF quickly & easily translated blocks of texts using APAN translation tools –APAN chat used extensively to communicate with ships at sea and CJTF –Agile development provided custom solution for tracking RFIs within hours of CJTF Request  Lessons Learned being used for next event

KM Best Practices DoD Support 14 Provide extensive training to large organizations that use APAN: –Train the Trainer –APAN KM relationship with organizations KM / IMs APAN “Premier Support” Community setup for COCOMs and organizations to collaborate and share information with APAN KMs APAN KM support to “significant” or “large” annual exercises (i.e. African Endeavor, Pacific Endeavor, Panamax, Ardent Sentry, RIMPAC, Bold Alligator, (etc.) experiences are brought back into the APAN KM team APAN KMs responsibilities are tied to specific geographic areas. Develops relationships and collaborative efforts. KMs involved with Agile software development and product teams directly supports the customer and their requirements / knowledge needs.

How To Request A Community? 16 Pick a platform: Zimbra or SharePoint 2010? o If your team is not sure, the knowledge management team will help! Request a COI via web ticket o New COI requestors must be US DOD or have a DOD sponsor Community Owners are responsible for: o Initiating and completing the request for a new community o Choosing a platform and selecting initial applications o Taking training to learn how to customize applications o Inviting and approving new members o Training users or directing users to APAN resources o Creating knowledge sharing processes o Passing on responsibilities to new Owners There is help for you from the APAN Team! o 24 hour Help Desk o Customer Engagement Team o Online Knowledge Base
